Why is my 4-month-old kitten sleeping more? Is she sick or normal?

Kittens and puppies can spend up to 20 hours per day sleeping. So this is quite typical. If the kittens are not wanting to eat much or drink much and seem to be experiencing poor weight gain then I would get concerned. Otherwise, if their energy level is normal when they are awake and food / water intake are normal, I would consider this quite normal.

Congrats on your kitten! It is normal for kittens to sleep up to 20 hours a day and be awake and playful for the remaining 4 hours. As long as Olive is active and alert with a good appetite and normal urination/defecation when she is awake, sleeping most of the day is completely normal. Good luck!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Kittens at this age can be expected to sleep 16-20 hours per day. The remaining g hours are typically broken up into bursts of energy and other activities such as eating and drinking. If ginger is not waking up to eat, drink or go to urinate / defecate I would have her examined by a vet. At this age, she should now begin her first series of vaccines as well. This could also be normal in a kitten as they are not always very active at that age. If you think she is sick it would be best to have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Have a good night!

It is normal for kittens to play really hard and then sleep really hard. At this age I expect them to sleep more than play. This changes as they get a little older. If she is eating at least 1/2 cup of food a day, she may be just getting full and realizes she doesn't have to eat it all at once and this is also okay. Sometimes kittens will graze on grass and plants out of curiosity. Just make sure you don't have an toxic plants in your house/yard. BUT if you think she is eating less than this and doesn't play much at all and you think she is getting weak then I would see your vet for an exam. She may have something else going on like an infection or parasites that needs to be addressed. Your vet will be able to do a fecal and possibly bloodwork if needed. I hope this helps!

If he is otherwise doing well, he is likely fine and this is not anything important. I am worried that Cube might be sick. Kittens normally are quite playful, so a kitten who just eats and sleeps without periods of high energy play and curiosity is not normal. Please take him to the vet for an exam. The vet will probably recommend some blood tests, and may also recommend a stool sample. It could be that he was born with some sort of internal defect such as a heart malformation that makes him not able to have periods of sustained play. Please have him seen by a vet ASAP.
