Kitten's red eye and pawing: Is it a vet emergency or Petco fix?

Young kittens often get conjunctivitis. It's not pink eye (meaning it's not contagious to you), but it may require medication from your veterinarian for clinical signs to resolve. It does not sound like an emergency, but I would schedule an appointment with your veterinarian within the next several days if clinical signs have not resolved or certainly if they worsen.

He may be pawing at the eye due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively! Good luck and best wishes!

Hi and thank you for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It looks as if Chiplo's eye may be infected. Sometimes if young cats or kittens are exposed to the Feline Herpes Virus or Calicivirus, these viruses can cause upper respiratory infections as well as ocular infections. Chiplo may need to be treated with your vet and placed on antibiotics for the eye infection. There is not a lot that can be done at home for an eye infection like this- your best bet is to visit her veterinarian. I hope this helps and thanks again for your post.

I always lean toward being more careful with eye conditions. Even though you could likely wait 5 days, I would probably go to the emergency vet if it was my cat. And it is likely uncomfortable for Roxie, so I would like to get it treated. Eye conditions can become very severe very quickly, so I would have it evaluated sooner rather than later. This is usually treated with antibiotic eye drops and cats usually respond well to therapy. I recommend that you have Bubbles evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If they agree that based on an examination, that seems to be the issue, they will likely prescribe medications to make him feel better. Good luck and best wishes!
