My kitten has a red bump near mouth after spider. What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 3.5 lbs

Our little kitten had a spider stuck in her fur near her mouth. We were able to get the spider out. However there wasn’t any swelling that day. Today, we noticed that she has a little red bump in the area where the spider was. How should we proceed?

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Genkl. I would just recommend monitoring the area daily. Hopefully this was just a small spider and will just cause a local irritation, but it is best to keep an eye on the area to watch out for infection or damage to the tissue which can result from certain types of spiders (Brown recluse). If you notice the area is continuing to increase in size, if it opens up and starts draining, or the skin turns purple or dark in color, then an exam at your vet is recommended.
