My 6-month-old kitten is pregnant. Will it stunt her growth or harm her?

It's possible for her to have her first heat cycle anytime after four months of age, but it normally occurs around six months. She would have to be in heat in order to accept the male and get pregnant, but you should be aware that this can happen anytime now. It's important to have her spayed prior to her coming into heat, because the procedure is more risky when they are in heat. They also tend to fight with other cats when they are in heat, which can increase their chances of getting serious infections and contracting FIV and/or FeLV. Spaying is the ultimate contraceptive, but Melatonin implants can suppress fertility short term while slow release GnRH agonist implants containing deslorelin can be used for short & long term contraception in cats. Bella may have difficulty feeding the litter as she is still growing herself. Confirm that she is indeed pregnant first. Your veterinarian may be able to do this via palpation or abdominal x-ray. If it is early enough, consider having her spayed for her health and safety and to prevent unwanted or accidental litters in the future. If you decide to leave her intact, she will need to be monitored closely throughout the pregnancy, delivery and raising of the litter until weaning.

Cats go into heat multiple times a year, so Habia can potentially have a couple of litters of kittens a year. The only way to prevent this from occurring is to have her spayed. After Habia has her next litter of kittens, I would keep her indoors and isolated from intact male cats completely. Once the kittens are weaned at six to eight weeks of age, I would take her into the vet to have her spayed. This will prevent her from becoming pregnant again.

If she was mature enough to come in to heat she should be fine. When the kittens are weaned at 6-8 weeks I would have her spayed though to prevent further pregnancies and to control the cat population. Good luck!

Usually around five or six months of age is the earliest I am accustomed to seeing pregnant cats, but four months is technically possible. In terms of care and diet, I usually recommend that pregnant cats are fed a diet of kitten food rather than adult food until they have weaned their kittens entirely. I do want to caution you however that it is not uncommon for very young cats that become mothers sometimes do not treat their young appropriately. They often abandon their young or even injure them intentionally in some cases. In addition to any other special care they might need, pregnant cats must not receive most medications, including flea / tick medications. They can be toxic to the fetuses. If you want to be sure of the pregnancy status, a veterinarian will need to perform an ultrasound after a certain period of time, or an x-ray after even more time. Hope this makes sense.
