My kitten has a pot belly, but tests are negative. Is it normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 6 days old | 2 lbs

My kitten Leila had a rough start. She was stuck in a pipe where I work. She got her shots September 2nd. I ordered all the tests I could. Everything came back negative! Her blood and stool samples said she has no parasites / worms but she still has a pot belly. I don't understand. She is eating and drinking fine and peeing and pooping fine. She seems perfectly normal except her pot belly. I just don't want to drop hundreds or more on vet bills if i don't have to, but of course i will if i must.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes a pot belly in a kitten can occur from intestinal parasites. However, it appears that your veterinarian has already ruled this out. Sometimes kittens do tend to have a pot belly appearance that it is not associated with anything concerning and it can be normal. If she is otherwise doing perfectly fine, I would not worry much about this. If at any point she developed any gastrointestinal signs such as diarrhea, inappetence and/or vomiting, have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Otherwise, enjoy your kitten!
