Why is my kitten sick, not eating, lethargic, and vomiting foam?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Tifa! Thanks for the pictures! The spaghetti noodle things in the vomit are adult round worms, which are an intestinal parasite. Since Tifa is lethargic, not eating and profusely vomiting I would recommend taking her in to the Vet. Hopefully with some supportive care and deworming medications we can get her back to normal. I have, in rare cases, seen intestinal parasites cause an intestinal obstruction. I hope this helps and I wish Tifa a speedy recovery!

Parasite infestation in the gastrointestinal system is definitively possible. Poor Frodo! Some cats do vomit during deworming due to the strength of the medication combined with the parasites moving through the GI system. These side effects should only last a few days, so if it's been longer than that, I would be concerned that it could be due to something else, such as a GI illness, a foreign body, or pancreatitis. I recommend withholding food for 12 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

It sounds as California is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

I would be worried if Chi Chi is acting weak. Viral infections can be serious and potentially fatal. A severe parasite infection or toxin can also look the same way. If you can get to a veterinarian, go today! The doctor can test for viruses and treat her with antivomiting medications and fluids. If there are no veterinarians around, you need to be force feeding her and giving her water with a syringe or an eye dropper. Try to get at least 30cc of water in her per day and 10cc of soft food. If she is vomiting however, this will make things difficult. I hope Chi Chi is ok. Best of luck.

It is very uncommon for a pet to pass away just from intestinal worms. I would like to know what kind of worms your pets are vomiting up. Typically roundworms come out of both ends, and are not significant enough to cause death in most cases. There was likely something else also going on with your pet dog and I am so sorry for your loss. Obviously you are dealing with an infectious agent that both pets have contracted and this shoudl be dealt with by your veterinarian. I suspect that both pets have both worm infestation and a possible toxin ingestion that needs to be treated for right away. Thank you for submitting your question regarding your kitten. If he is not improving, then I recommend that he has a further work up. He should have fecal testing, blood work and x-rays of his abdomen to determine the cause of his vomiting and inappetance. Kittens can react to deworming medication, but it is typically a short lived reaction. It worries me that he is still ill. There is likely another another disease process present. In the meantime, encourage him to drink so that he does not become dehydrated. I hope this information helps!
