Worried: Will my kitten be lonely as the only cat after moving?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Cats are finicky creatures. Cats tend to only like the cats they know. Even though your cat seems to like the ones she lives with doesn't mean she will like a new cat. Cats are territorial and like their own personal space. I would first allow your cat to get used to your new house with your boyfriend. See how is goes over several months. She will be stressed for a while just because of the move. Then see how she is once she is settled. If you want to get another cat for company consider it in a few months. Good luck!

It is important to give him lots of love, attention and play time. However, it is equally important that he is left alone to have nap time. He is rapidly growing and developing and much of this happens while his body rests. When you need to leave him alone, be sure to play with him first. This will help to tire him out. Then keep him in a small safe area such as a bedroom. Make sure that he has access to his litterbox, food and water. He will likely nap most of the time you are gone and play alone some. Cats tend to be quite adaptable and able to adjust to a new environment well, so I think Blueberry and her kitten will probably do just fine! Of course, every cat is different - some cats love the extra stimulation and socialization that comes with having other cats in the household, while other cats prefer to live on their own and are stressed by having other animals around. You know Blueberry best and might be the best judge as far as how she'll do. If you're worried about how she'll respond, you could always consider this a "trial run", and let your friend know that if your cats don't seem to be adjusting well, you could take them back to find better arrangements. You should anticipate that the first week or two will be an adjustment period and your cats might do a bit more hiding than usual, and initial encounters with the other household cats will probably include some hissing as they figure each other out - but within a few weeks Blueberry and her kitten should be looking more relaxed and comfortable in their new surroundings. I would have a health exam performed on her first to make sure there is no hidden illness that can cause this in such a young cat. Otherwise, If you are willing and able to provide a good home for a second cat then that is great way to give your kitten someone to play with if she likes other cats. If taking care of 2 cats is too much, then you can look into other ways to help her not be bored. You can find different toys for cats and a tower for her to climb that looks out window to relieve boredom.

It sounds like this is not an easy situation. Some cats will not like being kept inside while others adjust easily. You won't know until you try. There are some things you can do which can benefit any cat (a bored cat and a cat adjusting to a new life style). Cats can live alone if it would be too hard to get another cat, however it really varies on the individual. If you feel your cat is lonely or benefited from having a friend around, looking to adopt another cat may help them both bond and feel more comfortable. If your cat seems OK being on his own, you may just want to spend some more time bonding together, with extra cuddle or play sessions, treats, toys, etc.

It is perfectly find to have one cat even if you are going to be gone for hours. Many cats are single animal households. If you want to get another cat you can try to make sure they still get along but they may not even interact with each other while you are gone.
