Why is my rescued 5-week-old kitten so hyper? Will she calm down?

It sounds like Cheex-it is quite the character! Yes, this is all normal behavior. Kittens are very hyper active. They do eventually outgrow it. One thing you can do that may help would be to set aside 30 minutes to an hour every day for vigorous play. This will help him to be more calm throughout the day. The only thing I read that is somewhat concerning, is that he urinates on things. This could become a problem and may indicate a medical issue. Baby is not yet sexually mature at 2 months, so spaying will probably not affect her behavior much at this point. Once she reaches sexual maturity her behavior could be affected, so I would still recommend having her spayed before 5 months of age. Lots of play time and toys are necessary at this age, and as she gets older she should gradually calm down a bit.

Kittens are playful. That is how kittens are. They are like young children learning everything they can about the world around them. Eventually she will settle down. Play with her a lot, give her paper balls to catch and play with , a string with a feather on it. She sounds like a perfectly healthy kitten to me.

It sounds like you have your hands full! For better or for worse, this is typical kitten behavior. He will mellow out as he grows up, although he may always have a rambunctious personality. For right now, schedule some time every day to play with him using a laser pointer, balls, feathers on a string, or any other toys he loves. Aim for 10 minutes three times a day. Try your best not to scream and move quickly when he runs underfoot because he will think it's a game and do it more. If he's an only animal, instead of feeding him in a bowl a few times a day, hide kibble around your home for him to hunt - start really small with this to make sure he gets the idea. Hopefully you got your neighbors permission before rehoming the kitten! Cats can have a hard time with change, and the sudden move to a completely new household can be very stressful, thus leading to a change in behavior. If she's alone during the day she probably has excess energy. I do not think this is a medical problem. It's not really "excess" energy - it's normal for them at this age, just like its normal for human toddlers to run and scream sometimes for no reason. Just part of being a baby :). She should become calmer as she gets older.
