My 3-month-old kitten has a hole under its head skin. Is this normal?

If the nodule formed all of a sudden, then you are likely dealing with a cyst. There are a few different types of cysts that can form for various reasons, but most likely for a kitten is that she bumped her head or was bitten by another animal. When this happens, there can be some fluid that builds up under the skin. These types of nodules will feel more squishy and not hard. If the nodule is hard feeling, then it may be a blocked gland or some inflamed tissue. If Amba is otherwise acting normal and eating and drinking well, then there is little need to worry at this time. Just monitor the nodule. Often these types of nodules will go away within 2 weeks. If 2 weeks go by and the nodule is the same size or bigger, then you should bring her to a vet who can explore it a bit further.

Without being able to examine Willow, it is hard to say what it is or if you should be worried about it. In a young kitten, trauma would be the most likely. However, a small bump could also indicate infection or even a small tumor. I would continue to observe Willow for a day or two. If the bump goes away, then I wouldn't be worried, but if it is still there, growing, or she is developing other symptoms, then she should be examined by a veterinarian.

They will likely need a fungal culture to check for ringworm and skin scrapes to look for mites under the microscope. There is a common mite in kittens that lives within the hair follicles. An overgrowth can result in bald spots that do not typically itch. These mites are microscopic and cannot be seen by looking at the cats. If she has a small open circular open wound, it can be a breathing hole for a fly larva known as a cuterebra. In this case, you can see the larva moving in and out of the breathing hole. If this is the case, she will need to see her veterinarian for removal. If not, she could have a wound from trauma such as a bite if she is around other animals. She will need to see her veterinarian to determine the cause and if treatment is needed. In the meantime, do not allow her to lick the area as this can lead to infection. This could be a bit of a skin tag or a wart, or could be a bit of a reaction to a bug bite. It could also be a bit of a scab. From the image it is hard to tell exactly. If the area is not painful, and Ghost is eating, drinking and playing normally, then just monitor the spot for now. If it goes away it is likely a bit or a scratch. If it gets worse (red, swollen, bigger, or has any discharge) then I would have it seen by a vet. I would also check your kitten for fleas in case this is a scab from scratching due to itchiness from fleas. Best of luck with Ghost!

Cute kitty. Any swelling on the body that does not go away within a few weeks, that is somewhat soft and not causing any pain, is likely a hematoma. Hematoma's come from trauma that has burst a blood vessel underneath the skin. It can take 1-3 weeks for the blood to then be slowly absorbed back into the body. If this is a hematoma, it should go down slowly. If it happens to not go away, then yes it is best to have your vet take a look at it for other possibilities (i..e cyst, abscess, etc). It looks like she make have gotten a small wound on her head, maybe from getting swatted by another cat. Cat claws and bites tend to make wounds with small holes that seal over and trap bacteria inside. This will form a small abscess which will then rupture, which is what this appears to be to me. Keep an eye on it and keep it clean with a washcloth, warm water and a mild soap. Clean it two or three times a day and make sure to get all the soap off or it will irritate her skin. As long as it continues to improve and she is acting fine, eating and drinking, she should be fine. If it closes up again, swells, gets really red, hot, or if she starts acting sick or loses her appetite, get her in to see you vet as soon as possible as she may then need antibiotics to clear up the infection and heal.
