My 10-week-old kitten has a head lump. Is it serious or a bruise?

Without being able to examine Willow, it is hard to say what it is or if you should be worried about it. In a young kitten, trauma would be the most likely. However, a small bump could also indicate infection or even a small tumor. I would continue to observe Willow for a day or two. If the bump goes away, then I wouldn't be worried, but if it is still there, growing, or she is developing other symptoms, then she should be examined by a veterinarian.

Poor Kitty. If the bump is quite solid it is likely tissue swelling and should go down with time. If the bump is soft it could be due to bleeding, if it's not getting bigger it should be fine. If the bump is near an eye or the cat is showing any neurological signs I would have it checked by the vet to be safe. Likewise if the cat is very unsettled or the bump is growing you may need to go in to get some medication.

If the nodule formed all of a sudden, then you are likely dealing with a cyst. There are a few different types of cysts that can form for various reasons, but most likely for a kitten is that she bumped her head or was bitten by another animal. When this happens, there can be some fluid that builds up under the skin. These types of nodules will feel more squishy and not hard. If the nodule is hard feeling, then it may be a blocked gland or some inflamed tissue. If Amba is otherwise acting normal and eating and drinking well, then there is little need to worry at this time. Just monitor the nodule. Often these types of nodules will go away within 2 weeks. If 2 weeks go by and the nodule is the same size or bigger, then you should bring her to a vet who can explore it a bit further.

In a young kitten, a lump like this is likely a benign tumor, a cyst, or an abscess. If Mocha has his vaccines given in that area, it could be a localized reaction to the vaccine. It's good to have it checked out by a vet, but it's certainly not an emergency as long as everything else is normal (eating, drinking, behavior, litter box behavior). I would have him checked out by a vet sometime over the next week. I hope this helps!

If Theo is acting as normal and the swollen area is not bothering him at all, you should monitor him at home. The hematoma should disappear in the next 5-7 days. However, if the lump gets bigger or becomes painful, you should take Theo to your local vets for an appointment.

It’s hard to be sure what this is from the photo. The most common lump that come up quickly in cats is an abscess, or pocket of infection. They develop from a puncture wound usually. If it’s an infection it will be sore, hot to the touch, and feel soft. Due to Sampson’s age though this could be a mass or tumor. Those lumps are firm, non painful and do not feel warm. I recommend a veterinary exam to determine what the lump is. They can take a needle and examine some cells from inside the lump and get a diagnosis. If it’s an infection this should heal with antibiotics. If it’s a growth, depending on the diagnosis they may just watch it for enlargement or recommend surgical removal. This could be a bruise (hematoma) or a developing abscess. Your kitty could have gotten into a fight with another cat. I would observe it. It it starts hurting your cat or is fluctuating, or if your kitty is getting lethargic or stops eating he needs to be seen by a veterinarian for an exam.
