My cat has a purple-red lump on his side near his leg. Is it serious?

It sounds like Kit has either an abscess or cellulitis. I recommend to take him in to the veterinarian's office today for an exam and likely antibiotics as well as pain medication. The doctor may recommend to drain the abscess as well (assuming its not cellulitis). Infections after cat fights are very common. Hope Kit starts feeling better soon.

It looks painful and infectied. It may be a tumor or cyst or even an old wound that is an abscess and starting to open and drain. Clean with with warm soap and water then applly a warm compress to help the swelling. Make sure she stays confined so you can watch the area. If it ruptures and drains, it will actually be not as painful but just gently wipe the area if this happens. She does need to see a vet for antibiotics though.

Cute kitty. Any swelling on the body that does not go away within a few weeks, that is somewhat soft and not causing any pain, is likely a hematoma. Hematoma's come from trauma that has burst a blood vessel underneath the skin. It can take 1-3 weeks for the blood to then be slowly absorbed back into the body. If this is a hematoma, it should go down slowly. If it happens to not go away, then yes it is best to have your vet take a look at it for other possibilities (i..e cyst, abscess, etc). Yes, it is best to be safer rather than sorry and have the lump checked over as soon as possible. It could be a cancerous lump that requires urgent treatment. Your vet can start sampling it with a needle and putting the content on a slide and take it from there.

Please take Sabbath in to have the lump examined. The most common lumps in cats are from infections but those generally are hot and painful. Cats do get masses that can be cancerous so having it examined is best. They can get some cells through a small needle and have it looked at to determine if it needs to be removed. The lump may be benign or an infection which would be nothing to be concerned about but I recommend finding out for sure what it is. Hello. I would have this looked at by your vet tomorrow. The most common thing we see in cats are bite abscesses & it is really amazing how hard it is to sometimes find a bite wound. A cat's bite can leave a tiny needle like puncture & an abscess can begin to develop within hours. It can be very painful & make Buddy feel sick. If he is and the swelling had a sudden onset it could be an abscess from fighting with another cat or animal. The fact you describe it as possibly liquidy could indicate puss. If her cat is older and indoors it could be a cystic mass. I would recommend that she have a Vet take a look at it today before the weekend in case it is an abscess before it possibly breaks open. If it is an abscess the Vet may open it for it to drain and provide antibiotics Good luck!.
