My kitten has diarrhea and incision issues after spay. Should I worry?

The incision is holding together. Yes, typically the stitches are not pulled tight at the time of surgery to allow for the skin swelling that naturally occurs after the surgery. As for the diarrhea, it could be due to stress or any medications Ella was given after surgery. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

I'm glad that Nymeria isn't feeling lousy as a result of her diarrhea! Since it has been two weeks since her vaccines and spay surgery, I doubt that they are related to her current issues. A few causes of diarrhea can include parasites, stomach upset from diet, viruses, etc. If she hasn't had a recent fecal examination, I would call her regular vet about having a stool sample analyzed for the presence of parasites. Try changing her diet to a different protein source (e.g. chicken instead of fish) and avoid treats, table scraps, or dairy products since cats are lactose intolerant. Adding a probiotic, such as FortiFlora, to the diet can help some cases of diarrhea. Call your vet in a few days if the diarrhea persists, or if Nymeria begins vomiting or stops eating at any point.

Diarrhea in kittens can be due to a variety of reasons, including intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, a virus or another underlying issue. I would recommend Oreo be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her diarrhea, have any necessary testing done (fecal analysis, etc) and start any treatment (dewormer, antidiarrheal, probiotic) that she may need to help resolve it. You can be a good kitten parent and help her clean by taking a wet cloth or tissue and clean off the diarrhea. Make sure you remove it all and then throw away the tissue or wash the cloth. If the diarrhea does not go away within a few days, you should take her to your vet for an exam. She may have worms or an intestinal infection or a food sensitivity issue that needs to be addressed.

It could be due to the anti-inflammatory/pain contro medications he was on or even stress from the procedure. Monitor him closely for now. Hi and thanks for your request. From the picture it does not look like it is extremely inflamed but the leakage is concerning, especially if particularly persistent. It is unlikely that the wound is open and if she is fine in herself there is room to wait and monitor her. I would recommend to have her checked if the leakage persist in the next 24 hours.

It is possible that he could have had a reaction to the anesthesia or just the stress of being neutered. Or it could be completely coincidental and it could be secondary to something else like parasites, foreign body, a sudden change in food, pancreatitis, an underlying infection, and much more. I would try to feed him some plain boiled boneless and skinless chicken and white rice. I would also try to start him on some probiotics. Your vet should be able to provide these or give you some recommendations. You can try some plain sugar free yogurt but the probiotics in this isn't as good as the cat probiotics because we have different bacteria in our gut than in cats. The next step should be to have him re-examined and likely have some bloodwork done. I would also make sure the vet has ruled out an parasites including giardia which is difficult to find on a regular fecal test. If your vet doesn't think there is a foreign body, they will be able to provide him with a good anti-nausea medicine to help with the vomiting. I hope this helps!
