My spayed cat has diarrhea and a cone. How do I clean her?

Oreo’s incision looks to be healing normally. Continue to check it every day for redness swelling or discharge. G.I. upset is the most common side effect from the drugs used during the procedure. I recommend to call the veterinarian and they may recommend a bland diet and a probiotic. If the diarrhea becomes persistent or if Oreo starts acting sick, then she should be seen. I'm glad that Nymeria isn't feeling lousy as a result of her diarrhea! Since it has been two weeks since her vaccines and spay surgery, I doubt that they are related to her current issues. A few causes of diarrhea can include parasites, stomach upset from diet, viruses, etc. If she hasn't had a recent fecal examination, I would call her regular vet about having a stool sample analyzed for the presence of parasites. Try changing her diet to a different protein source (e.g. chicken instead of fish) and avoid treats, table scraps, or dairy products since cats are lactose intolerant. Adding a probiotic, such as FortiFlora, to the diet can help some cases of diarrhea. Call your vet in a few days if the diarrhea persists, or if Nymeria begins vomiting or stops eating at any point.

Cats are little stinkers! You may have to try a longer than normal rigid e-collar, or you can look for the bowl style that are used in cats. You could try a large tube sock as a dress (cut holes for head and arms). You could attach string or elastic to make "stirrups" that pull the shirt down. As for cleaning, a warm wet washcloth is all that is needed. Though, since it appears red and swollen, I would recommend taking her to the vet for evaluation and possibly to start antibiotics.

Kitties can be so naughty post surgery. Although it is not advised to do a full body bath, you can use a waterless shampoo and kitten wipes from your local pet store to get him clean. As long as the inicision site itself stays dry you are ok. Best of luck keeping kitty clean! : ) Take care.

It is probably brownish in color around the vulva due to the fact that she cannot clean the area. I suggest you just take some baby wipes (gentle formula) and wipe that area twice a day to keep it clean until the E-collar can come off. Please consider getting her spayed as soon as you can to avoid any future problems.

Mother cats typically will clean their kittens and ingest their stool to keep the area clean, however it shouldn't cause GI upset. Hormonal changes, changes to diet, underlying illness, parasites, etc, however may cause GI upset or diarrhea, so if it continues, having your vet take a look in person is best to rule out causes and provide treatment that is safe for mom and babies. The mother cat should start to litter train the babies once they are old enough (usually around the time they start to try solid foods around 3-4 weeks of age), however as they get older, you can start bringing them to the litterbox as well to encourage them to use it.

She may be slow and quiet on the day of the surgery, but on the following day she should be active and playful. You do not have to change her diet but you do need to put a head cone on her. She should not be allowed to go out until the wound is fully healed. Depending on the suturing technique, you may have to take her back to your vets in about 10 days time to remove the stitches.
