Why does my new kitten cry when left alone? Is it separation anxiety?

It can take your kitten a week or two to acclimate to its new surroundings. He has to get used to his new environment and used to the fact that he's not around his littermates and mother anymore. Just keep giving him plenty of attention and affection and he should be fine in no time.

Well, you’re both right. Halley has trained you well! She has figured out that if she cries, you will come and play. But on the other hand, an 8 week old kitten really can be very stressed and upset about being all alone. I’d consider a compromise like keeping her in a little carrier at night in your room. This is very common when you bring in a new cat into an environment. A lot of it is jealousy but also being territorial. I would make sure you have multiple litter boxes. I would also try to get some feliway diffusers to put around the house. Feliway is a cat pheromone which sometimes helps to calm them but not always. Also, give it some time. It sometimes takes several weeks for them to start playing and becoming tolerant of each other. If after a 4-6 weeks you are still having a lot of problems, I would talk to your vet about starting Coco on an anti-anxiety medicine to help calm her or consider finding a home for one of the kittens. It's possible Spirit may feel a bit anxious when you're gone. Cats can become clingy and exhibit the behaviors listed when they are feeling anxious. A good first step is always to schedule a vet checkup and rule out any possibility of illness that may be causing these behaviors as well. That said, if Spirit checks out healthy, there are a few things you can do to help. When you leave the house, playing a soothing talk show on TV or on the radio can help, as well as placing pheromone diffusers/calming collars on spirit to help her relax. You can also get her more used to you leaving by only leaving for a few minutes, then coming back. Make sure to not make a big deal out of the event when leaving, so she doesn't anticipate it and start to become anxious. A good play session to get her tired out before you leave can also help reduce anxiety as she'll likely just want to sleep while you're away. If the issue continues, or worsens, talking with a veterinary behaviorist may help as they can create a more tailored plan and see what's going on in-person.
