My stray kitten has a painful cat bite. Can I give it amoxicillin?

Can I administer small doze of amoxycillin to a stray kitten in my lawn that has been bitten in a brawl with a cat as its abscess has stopped oozing but it's still in pain

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor kitten!

Even though you are correct that this kitten likely needs antibiotics it needs to be prescribed by a Vet who can examine the kitten. We are not allowed to prescribe medications by law without a valid Veterinary Client Patient Relationship requires an examination. Cats are miraculous healers and if the kitten is eating and will allow you to clean the wound you can do that. Just be sure that you do not get bitten as you do not know the Rabies status of the kitten.

Antibiotics in the US aren't available over the counter, and cats are picky with their food so they are unlikely to eat food that is treated with medications. You can get a live animal trap and leave food in there to try to capture the kitty so it can get proper treatment.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Stray dog! I understand your situation and saddened there is not close veterinary care. Legally we can't prescribe medications for animals we can't actually touch and examine. Cleaning the wound is appropriate with water and a mild soap. You can also apply an antibiotic ointment. Amoxi/clav is dosed 15-20 mm/kg twice daily. A 500mg tablet is too much. I wish you the best!

Hi, amoxicillin can be used in kittens but how do you give it ? I have witnessed some owners doing more harm then good by administering oral medications to kittens. I would recommend to see your vet so they can be started with a more effective, safe and fast acting injection and then you can continue at home with some oral drops for example. The dosage in kittens would be 10 mg per pound for 5-7 days. Hope this helps,

The kitten needs medication, I recommend taking it to a veterinarian as it sounds like it needs antibiotics and possibly pain medication as well. Do not give any human medications as many are toxic to cats. Depending on exam findings, the vet may recommend xrays as well if they suspect significant trauma to the leg.
