Can kittens nurse if my cat is on topical amoxicillin?

No, I do not recommend giving your kitten human amoxicillin. The reason for this is two-fold. If you have liquid amoxicillin, it needs to be used within 10 days of being opened. Any leftover should be discarded or returned to your pharmacy for disposal. The second reason is a 3 lb kitten would use an extremely small dose compared to a human. Hi, amoxicillin can be used in kittens but how do you give it ? I have witnessed some owners doing more harm then good by administering oral medications to kittens. I would recommend to see your vet so they can be started with a more effective, safe and fast acting injection and then you can continue at home with some oral drops for example. The dosage in kittens would be 10 mg per pound for 5-7 days. Hope this helps,

We are not allowed to prescribe medications by law without a valid Veterinary Client Patient Relationship requires an examination. Cats are miraculous healers and if the kitten is eating and will allow you to clean the wound you can do that. What was your kitten on antibiotics for? It can take a couple doses to start to see an effect. At around 3 weeks of age I typically recommend starting to introduce wet kitten food that you can add the milk to until they get used to it. If it was longer than 14 days ago then it is no longer good. Is this formulation the same mg/ml as the one you got from the veterinarian? It is best for you to repost with that information so we can help you better. Honestly, though, if he is only sneezing, has no other symptoms and is eating/drinking well I would not bother with the antibiotics. Usually a URI is due to a mixed infection of bacteria and viruses - you cannot treat the viral portion with antibiotics and typically after 10 days the bacterial portion is under control. You are better off letting his own immune system kick in. I recommend you use something like Imuquin to help boost his immunity instead of using antibiotics. Amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid have both been commonly and safely used in cats for decades. This is a normal first line treatment and accurate dose for a mild skin inflammation or infection. If the incision area becomes red, swells rapidly, or begins to drain excessive fluid, or she begins to act differently- such as lethargic or uninterested in food, that would warrant a recheck with your veterinarian. At this time, her incision does not appear red and the scabbing appears quite dry and non-inflamed, so I am not overly concerned. I hope this helps.
