My kitten has a suspicious bump. Could it be a bot fly or wolf worm?

A cuterebra, or bot fly larva, could be underneath the skin but typically you would see a swelling and not be able to feel the larva underneath. Maggots or fly larvae can contaminate open wounds but you would see an obvious wound with the larvae present. There are no other types of worms that could migrate beneath the skin that would be in your area. It's possible that you're feeling something in the muscle. You might want to have your vet take a look to determine what it is that you are feeling.

I would recommend finding a vet that would be able to see Pusheen. If it is a larvae from a bot fly this would need to be removed. The larvae have to be removed carefully since they can induce anaphylactic reactions if not. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Hello. It is very unlikely that this is cancerous, but what it actually requires is a hands-on examination. My first inclination is the presence of a single fly larva under each swelling. Warble flystrike is a common problem in young cats during the summer. This may also just be what you described, some type of benign cyst, but It is unusual enough that I really recommend letting your vet take a look at this. Hello, sorry to hear about Maximus. It does indeed look like a bot fly wound. Bot flies are self limiting and when its time for them to develop, they will come out of the hole. The only way to treat them, is by physically removing them and in an a cat, they may need sedation. What you can do, is monitor for any swelling, pain, or discharge. If you note any of that then he needs to be seen by his veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It could be a small cyst (non cancerous growth) from epidermal origin, or potentially a small abscess that has not yet reached the point of rupture from a sting or bite. If it is possible I would suggest clipping the hair short to get a better look. If you can get a picture, this would help us to better help you out. Likely Freya will need to see a vet for either a drainage of this or a removal if the mass becomes bothersome. If she has a small open circular open wound, it can be a breathing hole for a fly larva known as a cuterebra. In this case, you can see the larva moving in and out of the breathing hole. If this is the case, she will need to see her veterinarian for removal. If not, she could have a wound from trauma such as a bite if she is around other animals. She will need to see her veterinarian to determine the cause and if treatment is needed. In the meantime, do not allow her to lick the area as this can lead to infection. Cute kitty! These look like they could be flea larvae. You could give this kitty a bath using a mild cat shampoo and then apply a flea preventative. You also might want to have your veterinarian examine this kitten to make sure it is healthy in general and to discuss routine deworming and vaccines.
