My kitten has fluid-filled lumps on its back. What should I do?

It could be a small cyst (non cancerous growth) from epidermal origin, or potentially a small abscess that has not yet reached the point of rupture from a sting or bite. If it is possible I would suggest clipping the hair short to get a better look. If you can get a picture, this would help us to better help you out. Likely Freya will need to see a vet for either a drainage of this or a removal if the mass becomes bothersome. Antibiotics will be warranted if the mass ends up being an abscess that is currently brewing under the skin. I hope this helps! Please resubmit if you can get some photos! This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include umbilical hernia, skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors (very unlikely given the age). If he is and the swelling had a sudden onset it could be an abscess from fighting with another cat or animal. The fact you describe it as possibly liquidy could indicate puss. If her cat is older and indoors it could be a cystic mass. I would recommend that she have a Vet take a look at it today before the weekend in case it is an abscess before it possibly breaks open. If it is an abscess the Vet may open it for it to drain and provide antibiotics Good luck!.

However, that looks like it could be a couple things on Kala's back. It could be a skin infection of infected cyst. It could also be related to a parasite below the skin called a cuterebra. Finally, it could also be a skin tumor. It would be best for you to take Kala to your veterinarian to have the area examined. Your veterinarian will be able to take samples and decide on a treatment. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign.
