My young kittens have brown stains on their faces. Is this normal?

It could be a normal color change, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or from saliva staining from licking the area too much (allergies). Have your vet take a look at it to determine if there is anything abnormal that needs to be treated. If she doesn't seemed bothered by it and you don't see any swelling, redness, or discharge than it may just be normal.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The brown areas could have been from his anal glands. Cats have gland inside their rectum that holds brown smelly fluid. When they are frightened or stressed they can express those glands. Usually it smells like dead fish (Skunks have similar glands). It is likely the bath was scary to him and he expressed his glands. As long as he is eating and drinking well and not vomiting or having diarrhea, I am sure Leo is fine. I hope that helps! Kisses to Leo!

It does not seem irritated so there is no need at this time to seek veterinary care. However, if at some point the skin underneath becomes irritated, bleeds or develops a discharge, have him evaluated by your veterinarian. Good luck!

Some eye discharge and tear staining can be normal, especially in white or other light-furred colors that will show the stain more easily. Many pet stores carry products to help remove the stain and keep the eyes clear. If the discharge becomes green, yellow, or you notice any other symptoms of illness, this could indicate an issue such as a respiratory infection instead, which should be checked out by your vet.

Due to the Persian being a brachycephalic breed ("smoosh-face"), it is not uncommon for them to develop brown discoloration or crusting in the facial fold above their nose. The most important part of the daily routine for Billu is to clean the facial fold. This can be done by using a warm, moist cloth to remove debris build-up. If the area ever appears red, painful, or has a discharge or odor then it could possibly be infected. When this occurs it is best to have them evaluated by a veterinarian so that a medicated cleansing wipe can be prescribed to help decrease the occurrence in the future.
