Why is my cat's white belly fur stained reddish-brown? Is it normal?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The most common reason for the fur to be that color is from excessive licking. There is a pigment in dog saliva that stains the fur reddish brown. As for her urine being brown or red, that is not normal. I would collect a urine sample and have her seen by your Vet tomorrow. The most common reason for red-brown urine is blood. Bloody urine can be from a UTI. The Vet can diagnose an UTI from a urine sample and also address her excessive licking (allergies, skin infection or fleas are common causes). I wish Harlow the best!

The pictures are a little difficult to see, but that red area on the skin is not normal. She may have created that herself from licking, but it could also be a skin infection. Either way, she likely needs medication. An appointment with your veterinarian would be a good idea. Sometimes fall brings a lot of environmental allergens. This is a little spot of wet dermatitis, a superficial infection of the skin. It will usually settle if you can stop her licking at it and bathe it daily with hibi scrub. If it starts to spread or worsen you will need to go to the vet for medication.

I think this is likely due to some form of trauma such as from her scratching at it. I would keep a close eye on it. If it is just that, it should start improving and resolving in the next few days to a week if she is not scratching at it. If it has not improved significantly or resolved in the next week have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further work-up. At the same time, if it worsens in the meantime, have her evaluated sooner. Try to keep the area as clean as possible. Good luck!

This would require an actual examination of the area to see what may be wrong so that therapy can be recommended. Usually this color change is a result of licking. If Bella has been licking the area she may have allergies causing her to lick and stain her fur a brown color. You can try using a gentle shampoo like Douxo calm to bathe Bella once or twice a week to see if this helps. I'd also recommend Bella be on a quality flea preventative like Bravecto or Vectra to prevent itching due to fleas. If Bella continues to have the color change it would be a good idea to have her examined by a veterinarian to ensure she does not have any skin infection or inflammation. Saliva staining can have this discoloration on fur or it may be a reaction to rubbing against something. Sometimes they over groom and lick an area due to an allergy or a wound or stress if there was change of some sort. If you can break the cycle and find the underlying cause, they hair will grow back out white and look normal again
