My kitten has black crusty nose discharge. Is it an infection?

I have an orange tabby kitten that is about a week old that has dark spots on Its nose that seem to resemble freckles and some black crusties in the corner of his nostrils. I noticed it a day ago. I'm confused as to what it may be. Can't find any answers regarding such a young kitten. Please help. It was an unplanned litter from a female torti/calico that showed up and we adopted, but affording a vet at the moment isn't in the near future unfortunately... Thank you!

Your kitten may have an upper respiratory infection, which is common in stray cats. The nasal discharge can form as black crusty discharge in the nostrils. If it is eating and drinking well and seems to be growing, you can clean the crusty discharge with a warm washcloth. At some point it needs to be examined, vaccinated, and dewormed when you can afford to do so.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think it can be crust from having a bit of nasal discharge. Sometimes cats can have a mild nasal discharge from perhaps allergies which can then when it dries up it can result in mild crusting. While this can be an infection, if she is otherwise doing well, you can continue to monitor her for now. If this does not improve in the near future, have her examined by your veterinarian for further assessment. Good luck and have a good day!

It is probably due to nasal discharge that has dried out. If your kitten is regularly vaccinated and does not show any other sign like sneezing or coughing or eye discharge, that should not be a problem and I would not be worried.

Why does my cat have brown or black crust on his nose? Is it serious?

The crusts are caused by the nose running just a little, then it mixes with skin cells and bacteria or yeast to turn brown. Some cats can have a low-grade chronic upper respiratory infection to cause it. In some of these cats, a supplement called lysine can help (see link below). My kitten has black crusty spots on her nose and chin. What is it?

Hello, sorry to hear about Luna. It sounds like she is having acne. This is typically brought on in cats due to them rubbing their face and snout against objects such as the rug or food bowls. Most often, you need to wipe their snout with skin sensitive baby wipes and change their food bowls to stainless steel. This are the first steps to try, and if it does not work then some cats may need medications. Your kitten is a bit young for this disease if she is truly 21 days old, so if the cleaning does not help or if the black spots are spreading, then she should be seen by a veterinarian. I would recommend a vet visit. The picture is a little blurry but it may be infected. It could possibly be due to ringworm. The vet may want to do a skin scraping or fungal culture to determine what it is in the best course of treatment.

Hello. I am a bit concerned about this kitten possibly having a ringworm or other fungal infection. This is something you should let your veterinarian take a look at. The nasal congestion could be an upper respiratory infection that may have come on from the stress of the surgery. We do not always put these kitties on medication, especially if they are acting normal & eating well. But do try to have the pictured kitten seen soon.
