My 3-month-old kitten ate human vomit. Can cats get sick from it?

Any pet vomiting beyond 24 hours should be examined by the veterinarian. Just like humans, there are many many causes of vomiting and some of the causes can be very serious. I'm unsure of the timeline of the vomiting for Sake. I always recommend to play it safe when in doubt and have Sake examined today. Oh no it's not good that Kitty ate that vomit! At most, I would expect that eating this vomit could cause some GI upset, causing her to vomit and/or have diarrhea. It's good that it doesn't look like she has eaten the plastic bag, and if she ate the bag, I would be concerned that the bag could cause a foreign body obstruction. Keep an eye on her for now, and if you see any vomiting or diarrhea, I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps her. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. It is not likely your cat(s) "caught" a stomach bug from you. It is more likely the outdoor cat was exposed to an illness which he brought back. Ideally, you should have them examined by your veterinarian to diagnose illness or injury. Supportive care, such as IV or subcutaneous fluids, anti emetics and antibiotics, may be indicated. If this isn't possible, try a 24 hour fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. If It doesn't help, you'll definitely need to see your veterinarian.

I am sorry to hear this! Yes, it is possible he picked up something from the new kitten even if she was asymptomatic. I would recommend taking them both in and having them tested for infectious diseases and worms at a minimum. I hope it is nothing too serious but better safe than sorry! I hope this helps!

Poor cats. Yes cats can catch bugs and get ill just like people can. And since both were sick simultaneously, it has to be something they both got into and ingested or were exposed to. It is very odd that nothing has changed in their environment, so finding out the culprit is going to be tough. You also may want t check with the company that made the filter you just changed just to make sure no recalls exist. Also I would consider just changing the filter altogether just to cover every possibility here. Also make sure that there also isn’t any chance of them getting into medications in the home as well. Regardless of that, they should be seen by your vet if they are still not eating and unwell. That is a long time to go without a good appetite, especially for a cat, and at the very least the vet can give them anti-nausea medicine, antibiotics (if indicated), and fluids to treat for any undelrying dehydration. If it is viral or bacterial it can be. But if its from eating something gross that is disagreeing with him, food allergy or sensitivity, pancreatitis, intestinal inflammation then no it shouldn't be contagious.
