I'm sick. Can my cat catch my stomach bug or illness from me?

Generally feline and human viruses do not transfer between each other, and it is highly unlikely a cat can get norovirus. If they did, it would not be the same symptoms as you see in humans. There is some limited research suggesting that dogs can carry strains of the human norovirus but it is thought unlikely that the dog will exhibit symptoms of the human norovirus. If they do become ill, it's more likely an unrelated gastroenteritis. I hope this helps!

It is not likely your cat(s) "caught" a stomach bug from you. It is more likely the outdoor cat was exposed to an illness which he brought back. Ideally, you should have them examined by your veterinarian to diagnose illness or injury. Supportive care, such as IV or subcutaneous fluids, anti emetics and antibiotics, may be indicated. If this isn't possible, try a 24 hour fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. If It doesn't help, you'll definitely need to see your veterinarian.

Animals and people can share the same viruses but not commonly. And there are many ways he could get your kids virus besides eating the vomit. Cats definitely can get gastroenteritis, which just means inflammation of the stomach and intestines, from many things. I would just watch Gus. I hope everything gets better for you!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Some illnesses can be transmitted from one cat to another from your hands or clothing. I recommend washing hands and possibly leaving shoes away from your cats if the stray sneezed on or near them. Basic good hygiene will help prevent disease transmission to your kitties. If you are able please take the stray into the vet as soon as you are able as it sounds like she may have a significant respiratory infection. Be sure that she is tested for feline leukemia and FIV before you ever let her near your cats to be safe.

I am sorry to hear that everyone has been so sick! The one parasite that can transfer between species that produces symptoms you describe is something called giardia. You may consider asking your physician to test you for it. Other possibilities include salmonella, Cryptosporidium, and campylobacter. When testing my patients for these more rare diseases I use a test through idexx called a GI fast panel PCR. You may Consider asking your veterinarian to run this test. Using proper hygiene when handling pets is important as well as making sure they are not eating any forms of raw diet that can transmit disease. Best of luck and I hope you improve soon. Any pet vomiting beyond 24 hours should be examined by the veterinarian. Just like humans, there are many many causes of vomiting and some of the causes can be very serious. I'm unsure of the timeline of the vomiting for Sake. I always recommend to play it safe when in doubt and have Sake examined today. I can't think of any respiratory diseases that would readily pass from you to your cat. It would be more likely that Toews has a feline upper respiratory infection caused by something like the feline herpesvirus or calicivirus if his eyes are red and watery. An allergy would also be possible. If Toews's eyes seem very red, if he is squinting, or if the discharge gets worse I would recommend having him examined by your vet.
