How old should my kitten be to safely use silica crystal litter?

Silica litters are non toxic if ingested however If too much of the silica litter is eaten it could cause an intestinal obstruction. Silica litter can also cause respiratory irritation in cats with allergic airway disease like asthma. Since your kitten seems to like to eat the silica litter I recommend finding a different litter type that she is not interested in eating. While there is no scientific literature stating that clumping litter is not safe for kittens under 3-4 months, it is something where kittens the young are more curious and may eat it. I would introduce clumping litter after 3-4 months and before that you can use non clumping litters. There are all different types of cat litter out there now. There are many proponents of each type. Clay is one of the most popular types of litter due to it being inexpensive and effective. Kittens have been using this kind of litter for a long time, including many of my own. They should be fine with it.

Clay or crystalline litter is not good if eaten as it can cause obstruction and some can be toxic if ingested. Place only a small scatter over newspaper in the tray until he learns how to use the tray more appropriately. Monitor for any vomiting or constipation

This litter type can be perfectly fine for your kittens as long as they don't consume any of it. Another option is to start by simply using shredded newspaper or a newspaper-blend litter, such as Yesterday's News. More traditional clumping litters are also okay to use.

I think this should be safe for your young kittens to use. They may be inquisitive at first about the new litter but they probably won’t ingest enough to cause an issue. You could try a corn or wheat based litter like World's Best Cat Litter or Swheat Scoop, or a wood litter like Okocat if you want to avoid clay litter. You could also try a clay based low dust litter like Dr. Elsey's. Even though she is used to pellets the transition to a clay litter could be fine - I'd start by putting out a litter box with the new litter while still keeping the old one and if she starts using the new one take the old one away.
