Is it safe to use clay litter for my new kitten or young cat?

This litter type can be perfectly fine for your kittens as long as they don't consume any of it. Another option is to start by simply using shredded newspaper or a newspaper-blend litter, such as Yesterday's News. More traditional clumping litters are also okay to use.

Clay or crystalline litter is not good if eaten as it can cause obstruction and some can be toxic if ingested. Place only a small scatter over newspaper in the tray until he learns how to use the tray more appropriately. Monitor for any vomiting or constipation

I think this should be safe for your young kittens to use. They may be inquisitive at first about the new litter but they probably won’t ingest enough to cause an issue. Young kittens will mouth everything and try out everything to find out whether it is edible. Therefore I would wait until they are about 3 months old before using that kind of litter. You can use shredded paper or plant based litter before that, as this will not be detrimental should it be ingested.

While there is no scientific literature stating that clumping litter is not safe for kittens under 3-4 months, it is something where kittens the young are more curious and may eat it. I would introduce clumping litter after 3-4 months and before that you can use non clumping litters. You could try a corn or wheat based litter like World's Best Cat Litter or Swheat Scoop, or a wood litter like Okocat if you want to avoid clay litter. You could also try a clay based low dust litter like Dr. Elsey's. Even though she is used to pellets the transition to a clay litter could be fine - I'd start by putting out a litter box with the new litter while still keeping the old one and if she starts using the new one take the old one away.

Some cats can definitely have issues with dusty litter, it can cause flare ups of asthma and may make your cat decide to go potty somewhere else. Though once it settles, it may not cause issues unless your cat is a very aggressive digger. I would recommend staying with the same brand of litter you used before, or you can look into non-clay litter options, like Feline Pine or Yesterday's News. If you do decide on a different type of litter, I would put it in a second litter box so that Chloe has the option to choose which type of litter she prefers.
