Can a large huntsman spider in my house harm my curious young kitten?

This is not a black widow nor a brown widow, nor a hobo nor yellow sack spider which would be the dangerous spiders in Oregon.. So, while it is likely your kitty was bitten, it is unlikely that there is lasting damage. The poison of this spider likely did hurt or irritate your cat, but she should be fine since the licking and pawing stopped.

Hi Kelly, Are you 100% sure he was bitten? Hunstman spiders rarely bite. They do possess some venom, and if bitten, the area around the bite may get inflamed and/or infected. Symptoms vary depending on the type of spider and amount of venom released when bitten. Here is a list of possible symptoms to look for: General problems: Weakness/Lethargy Muscle or joint pain Seizures Increased heart rate Trouble breathing Drooling Diarrhea Vomiting Trouble walking/standing At the location of the bite: Swelling Redness Pus/Infection If you notice any abnormal symptoms then get him to your vet for an exam.

The main insect to be concerned about would be a venomous spider like a black widow or brown recluse. Bites from these spiders can cause large wounds and tissue necrosis and can be very complicated to treat. Other insect bites will be a nuisance but should not cause any major problems. Additionally, if your cat eats the bugs, the only symptoms you may see are those related to GI upset. These symptoms would include drooling excessively, inappetance, vomiting and/or diarrhea. I am sorry to hear about your concern for Genkl. I would just recommend monitoring the area daily. Hopefully this was just a small spider and will just cause a local irritation, but it is best to keep an eye on the area to watch out for infection or damage to the tissue which can result from certain types of spiders (Brown recluse). If you notice the area is continuing to increase in size, if it opens up and starts draining, or the skin turns purple or dark in color, then an exam at your vet is recommended.
