My cat tried to eat a spider. Is he okay? What symptoms to watch for?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 4 years and 4 months old | 8.5 lbs

My cat was playing with a spider and I went to grab it when he tried to eat it. I got the spider but he started wiping his mouth and tongue and licking around his mouth a lot for about 5-10 min after. It’s been about 40 min and he’s stopped doing that but I’m wondering if I should be on the lookout for anything indicating that he got bit or if it was poisonous. I added a picture of the spider, as I couldn’t identify it. Thank you!

This is not a black widow nor a brown widow, nor a hobo nor yellow sack spider which would be the dangerous spiders in Oregon.. So, while it is likely your kitty was bitten, it is unlikely that there is lasting damage. The poison of this spider likely did hurt or irritate your cat, but she should be fine since the licking and pawing stopped.

I wouldn't be too concerned if he didn't actually eat the spider. What you are describing is usually how a at responds if they lick or taste something that tastes bad to them, and they may drool or try to get the taste off by pawing at their mouth.

If you are concerned, signs of something more serious to watch out for would include swelling of the face or neck if there's an allergic reaction, swelling, redness or pain at the site of any bites, or changes such as vomiting/diarrhea, loss of appetite, etc that would indicate something is going on. If you do see these issues, schedule a vet visit is best.

The type of spider you are describing does not sound like one of the toxic spiders we see. However, any spider bite can cause irritation and pain. I would keep an eye out for swelling, discharge, difficulty eating, etc. If you see any signs such as these I would get mirz checked out by your vet for further treatment. Hope this helps! Oh no, poor Sylar! If he's not pawing at his mouth or foaming anymore, I would keep an eye on him. It could be the pain from the spider caused that reaction. I would try to look up the spider on the internet to see if it is poisonous or not, and if it is, rush him into an ER vet now. While monitor him, if you see any swelling of the mouth, vomiting, foaming of the mouth, respiratory difficulties, or the bite in his mouth gets bigger, I would have him seen by a vet right away.

What bugs are dangerous if my dog or cat gets bitten or eats them?

The main insect to be concerned about would be a venomous spider like a black widow or brown recluse. Bites from these spiders can cause large wounds and tissue necrosis and can be very complicated to treat. Other insect bites will be a nuisance but should not cause any major problems. Additionally, if your cat eats the bugs, the only symptoms you may see are those related to GI upset. These symptoms would include drooling excessively, inappetance, vomiting and/or diarrhea. My cat licked a centipede. Is it dangerous? What symptoms to watch?

This looks like a house centipede (Scutigera coleoptrata). If so, it is not deadly. House centipedes do their hunting via a set of venomous front legs. The good news is that they are usually unable to bite/sting through skin. If they are successful, it is not life-threatening, it's supposed to feel a lot like a bee sting. Usually if cats lick/ingest something toxic they will foam at the mouth - if you notice that all you need to do is rinse out her mouth with tap water. Don't shove or force the water down her throat or she could aspirate the water into the lungs. If she was stung by some chance it will likely resolve on it's own. I would only be worried if she actually at the whole thing and even then, it's not toxic; it just may upset her stomach. Hope this helps. If you have more questions please post again.

My cat has a swollen lip. Is it a spider bite? What should I do?

Yes a spider bite can cause a swelling. the swelling does not look very extensive so likely was not caused by one of the "nasty" spiders such as a black widow or a brown recluse. If your kitty, however, starts getting abdominal pain (rigid belly) or the swelling starts to change color, then a visit at the emergency room is the next step. If Maisey eats, drinks, lets you touch the swelling and otherwise does not act ill, then I think you have nothing to worry about and the swelling should go away within a day or so.

Can a large huntsman spider in my house harm my curious young kitten?

Huntsman spider aren't present in the US, so I would definitely check with your local veterinarian to see what their experience is with them and cats, however it appears that the bite is painful but doesn't cause lasting effects for humans. I image it could cause some distress for your young kitten, but am not sure if it would be truly dangerous.
