Are human drugs like Primperan and Bactrim safe for kittens?

It depends if Lilly is still feeding the kittens. When prescribing antibiotics to a pregnant or lactating cat it is very important to be aware of the potential side- effect that the antibiotic may have on the kittens. Metronidazole is transmitted into mum's milk therefore is generally not recommended for lacating cats. However, there are some occasions when the benefit for the mum is higher then the risk for the kittens. Please, get in touch with your vet to discuss why Lilly was prescibed this antibiotic. If Lilly is not feeding the kittens anymore, obviously she will be ok to take a course of metronidazole.

I can't say that it's safe to give her, and you have to be very careful giving human medications to young kittens, as you can accidentally do great harm. In addition, it may not be the right treatment for her diarrhea. For example, diarrhea in kittens can be caused by intestinal worms, which Metamucil will do nothing to help with treatment. You need to take her into a vet as soon as possible, as persistent diarrhea is dehydrating. The vet can diagnose what is causing her diarrhea and can treat her for it. Best of luck.

Chloramphenicol does have some serious side effects in humans, so it is recommend that humans wear gloves when administering the medication to animals. There are lots of other options on antibiotics, but that should be discussed with your vet based on their diagnosis. Hi. Imodium is contraindicated in cats. Please don't give otc meds to cats as many are toxic. I would recomend a vet visit if she is not eating, vomiting and diarrhea. She may have parasisites, have ingested toxins, have primary GI disease or any number of other things. Unless prescribed for her I wouldn't recomend the amoxicillin/clavanuate as one of the side effects of this antibiotic can be diarrhea and vomiting. If she was prescribed this, contact her vet as they need to know she is reacting to it. Try offering small amounts of bland chicken and rice. If she can eat and keep it down gradually mix her cat food back in. But if not she needs a vet visit.
