My hedgehog has a red area on his head spikes. Is it food dye?

The quills may fall off if they were damaged. They should grow back unless the follicle was damaged. You can use dilute Betadine (1 part Betadine to 10 parts water) to clean the wounds until you can get him to the vet on Monday. You should be able to get Betadine at any pharmacy. Make sure it is solution and not scrub. ( https://www.walmart.com/ip/Betadine-Solution-Topical-Antiseptic-Bactericide-Liquid-0-5-Oz/47574887 ) If you can't get this you can go to Petco and get this Vetericyn wound spray. ( ) He will need antibiotics orally so definitely get him to your vet as soon as you can. Watch him closely because I would be more worried about any internal injuries he may have. If he starts to seem very sick you need to get him to an ER vet ASAP. Best wishes.

Hematuria or blood in the urine can have multiple causes, but bladder stones,urinary bladder infections, reproductive (uterine) cancer and severe kidney disease are all possible causes. They do not usually get them form insects- but can get them from bedding, other hedgies and other pets. This does sound like it could potentially be a parasite so I would see a vet for some testing to find out what it is-- she can give you some meds if needed to get rid of any parasite-- there is not anything safe over the counter for most of the parasites that might affect them. Make sure to get rid of any wood shavings in her cage and keep it very clean and urine free.

Dermatopathies such as quill mites, skin infections, vitamin A deficiencies or other nutritional problems needs to be investigated. Monitor her for being itchy. Green stool can happen in hedgehogs. It can be caused by a variety of reasons, including stress, illness, or diet change. If he otherwise seems normal than you can monitor him and see if the color goes back to normal, especially if you have introduced a new food. If you have any concern that your hedgehog is sick, take him to a veterinarian. It is fine to add water to his food but you should still offer him fresh water in a water bottle at all times.

Thanks for reaching out about Quill. Seems like a good work up so far. The urinary bladder can have inflammatory problems that can result in bleeding. If the urinalysis was not collected via a cystocentesis (a needle into the bladder to collect) that should be done, as if that urine has blood, then blood from bladder or kidneys. If that urine is clear, blood could be from testicles or urethra. If it seems as it is a urinary bladder inflammation, some anti-inflammatories could help. Good luck.

Hello! Quilliam could have any number of problems. His feces could be green and mucousy from parasites, a bacterial infection, a liver problem, or from eating something he shouldn’t have. In order to get a better idea what is going on, the feces should be examined for parasites, fungus, and bacteria. A full physical exam and perhaps X-rays or blood work would also be helpful and your veterinarian would be able to do this. There isn’t really anything you can do at home aside from evaluate his diet and make sure he isn’t eating inappropriate food or items. Good luck.
