My FIV cat gags a lot and swallows back. What's wrong, how to help?

Chronic vomiting could be due to kidney failure, pancreatitis, hyperthyroidism and many more medical conditions. i would recommend having a blood test doe at your vet's, this should help revile what is causing this.

Radiographs of your cat's chest and abdomen will reveal any abnormalities with his heart, lungs, will show if there is fluid accumulated, any tumors or anatomical changes that signal heart or pulmonary disorders or other conditions that could be adversely affecting him. You can try to stimulate his appetite by adding some water or low sodium chicken broth to dry food, mixing in a little wet food and'or warming his food. Warming makes it more aromatic and therefore more appealing to a cat with a depressed appetite. It is vital that he continues to eat, as cats can experience liver damage after only a couple of days if not eating. Work closely with your vet, call and ask questions, get him in for rechecks, this helps them keep on top of Bunlot's condition.

Gremlin is a lucky kitty to be with you. Since he has FIV, he's got an increased risk of both infections, and of just generally being more prone to becoming inflamed. Make sure no one smokes cigarettes (or any other substances) in your home. Avoid aerosol sprays, etc, as these could be irritating to his airways, and with him coughing that is a real concern. You can try putting him on a probiotic, as this may help boost his immune system a bit. It is reasonable to continue to treat with antibiotics as needed. I agree, those symptoms are concerning for intestinal, oral, or kidney disease. Unless the test was falsely positive, cats don't outgrow FIV. There is also no cure for the virus, though not all cats that have it will develop disease. I would recommend that Tiger get checked out by the vet. After a thorough physical exam and review of his symptoms, the vet may recommend bloodwork, urinalysis, or x-rays to see what is going on. Your cat Felix is nauseated and trying to vomit. If this has been going on for some time, or if he is very lethargic and not himself, he may be very seriously ill. I recommend a vet visit right away for blood work and X-rays of his belly to see what is making him sick, and if he needs emergency supportive care like surgery and IV fluids.

This may be an allergy or a skin infection that is causing these symptoms. Any cat with FiV has a compromised immune system so it is harder to keep basic infections under control. Your vet can check his liver and kidney values a thyroid tobser if those are contributing factors and see what medicine will be needed to clear the problem

This sounds a lot like your kitty has problems with his teeth or possibly severe gingivitis or ulcers in his mouth. If he lets you have a look, inspect his mouth for red spots, a red gum line and severe tartar, especially on the molars or any swelling. He will likely need a dental cleaning under anesthesia, if he has not had one in the last year or two. Cats get so called FORL, that is the neck of the tooth often rots underneath the gum and eventually starts hurting. Typical signs would be red gums and some swelling and not letting you have a look at his mouth. Affected cats often want to eat, go to the food, eat a little and then stop only to return later for more but few bites. Please make an appointment with your vet for an exam very soon. In the meantime feed canned food which will be less painful to eat.
