The ulcers are likely due to feline stomatitis, or a calicivirus infection. Without evaluating him, I can't make this diagnosis and would recommend consulting with your vet for more information about his specific condition. Stomatitis is a frustrating condition and the best remedy we have is often a full mouth teeth extraction. Antibiotics and steroids can be effective in some cases, but lysine has not shown to be effective. Either way, it sounds like poor Mr. Kitty is in need of pain control and further treatment, so it's best to take him for a recheck exam by your vet, so they can prescribe the necessary medication. If she is unable to even swallow water she will need to have a feeding tube inserted to provide nutrition and may also require intravenous fluids to prevent dehydration. This must be extremely distressing for her and it may be time to consider letting her go if the condition cannot be managed as fasting in cats can create further serious health complications on top of the tumor

Unfortunately there is no topical numbing oral solution for cats that I know of but something such as Sucralfate may help alleviate the ulcerations inside of the mouth. I would discuss this with a veterinarian as you will need a prescription to get Sucralfate. If she has stomatitis, she may need to have all of her teeth removed to help resolve this problem. This wound does look very uncomfortable and ideally a feeding tube and repeat surgery to remove further dead tissue would provide room for healing. Alternatively, oral antibiotics, medical grade honey on the wound and feeding a blended, high calorie soft food such as royal canin recovery may provide enough relief for him to heal it over time but will not work if he is unable to swallow either from pain or swelling in which case euthanasia is recommended

Cats are very well known for having a mouth tumor called squamous cell carcinoma which carries a poor prognosis. However, it could still be something else. The only way to know is by doing some sampling via fine needle aspiration or possibly a biopsy. If squamous cell carcinoma is confirmed, it is not likely to respond to medications much other than mild decrease in inflammation. Treatment for squamous cell carcinoma is limited by how aggressive this tumor is though sometimes surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are options. Sorry for the sad news. Poor Amelia! This tumor could be very painful to her, and that may be why she isn't eating. It could hurt too much for her to eat. You can try offering her some boiled white meat chicken (no bones), but if she won't eat that, take her back into the vet to discuss giving her pain medications. Have pain relief may help her eat again. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. I would also make a decision as soon as possible on treatment for her, she cannot stay in this condition for long. I hope this helps!

Hello Linda, So sorry that Bugger has this issue. The other thing you can do to make him more comfortable is to give him oral pain medications, such as piroxicam and/or buprenorphine. Those medications will reduce discomfort associated with the tumor. You will need to get those medications from your veterinarian as they are prescription only. Topical medications unfortunately, do not help. Again, I am sorry that you and Bugger are dealing with this. Cancer is a terrible disease.
