My cat still has lice after shampoo. How do I treat it effectively?

Lice are not terribly common in cats. I don't really feel like Frontline or fipronil products work very well anymore. I prefer products like Revolution or Bravecto. Seresto collars also offer great protection.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unfortunately, there is nothing orally for cats that works to my knowledge. All the options for cats that I am aware of are topical. If you do decide to try a topical product PLEASE read the labels carefully as there are a few that are sold for dogs that are FATAL to cats. I like Advantage II from Bayer. It is over the counter, very effective, and lasts about 4 weeks - long enough to break the life cycle. Unfortunately, all the cats would need to be treated at the same time to prevent re-infestation. Billu could have lice but another concern would be ringworm (which humans can get!). To know if there are lice, you need to take him to the vet and they will look under the microscope to know if lice are present. Ringworm is diagnosed with a fungal culture. A product such as Revolution or Advantage Multi will usually kill mites. It will take 2-3 months to get rid of lice. Ringworm is harder to treat and typically involved medicated dips or topical ointments. You will also need an Elizabethan collar so that Billu does not lick off the product. It could take 2-4 months to get rid of ringworm pending which type of treatment is used. I would recommend to make an appointment at your vet to have him diagnosed and treated appropriately. Hi and thank you for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Unfortunately Advantage Multi is not labeled for use in cases of chewing lice. It is indicated for fleas, ear mites, heart worm prevention, hookworms and roundworms in cats which may explain why they are still itching. Frontline Plus is a good topical treatment that covers fleas, ticks, and chewing lice. In order not to overload their systems, I would wait until 9/26/2017 to apply the Frontline Plus if you believe it is chewing lice, although I would have a veterinarian diagnosis this first. They may be itching because they have a flea allergy and sometimes when the fleas die off after product administration this can cause itching. I would wait and see if the itching decreases in a few days with the advantage multi and if not, have them seen by a veterinarian. Best wishes to you and Neko!

Fleas are the worst but the good news is that you can effectively get rid of them if you use a good product and are diligent in the treatment. The key to getting rid of fleas is to make sure EVERY dog and cat in the house is treated with a good flea prevention AND that this treatment lasts an entire 6 months. Your vet can give you access to the best flea products on the market. top products for cats are Revolution and Cheristan. I recommend to ask your veterinarian what they used and to continue it for a solid 6 months. Also know you will likely continue to see fleas for at least 6 weeks (assuming your product is working correctly) because of the newly emerging adult fleas. Lastly, know there is great variation in the effectiveness of topical flea products. As far as they go, for over the counter options, name brand Frontline and Advantage are your best options (but what you get from the vet is usually newer and better). Good day, In addition to treating your pet, for fleas, you should treat the inside of your house and yard, especially if Lucy goes outside. I favor a product named Comfortis for cats with serious flea issues. You can also considering alternating flea products to keep the fleas guessing. If you opt for Comfortis, consider giving it for 3 months in a row to see its full potential. I know a lot about fleas since I work in warm Florida in 32259 zip code.

It is not recommend you use ivermectin yourself without the guidance of a vet - it is too easy to overdose. All you need to do is apply a product called Revolution (sealamectin - a derivative of ivermectin). It is a topical spot-on treatment you would use once every few weeks until the skin is cleared. You should be able to get this from the vet. Lime sulphur dip is fine to use but since cats don't tolerate bathing that well it will probably be a fight.
