My cat has shedding hair and lice. What's the treatment and how long?

You need to take your cat to a veterinary doctor for an exam and for treatment of the lice. She may also have sarcoptes mites. This can be treated very easily with an ivermectin injection. Being so infested with lice can make a cat very ill as the lice will suck her blood and then she can get anemic. Since she is grooming a lot she is probably ingesting a lot of hairs which makes hair balls which she will try to get rid of by regurgitation. You can get a so-called "hairball remedy paste" in a pet shop or your local pharmacy or at the vet. This paste will help your cat get rid of the hairballs. How lovely of you to take in Billu! First I would give him Capstar. It’s a one time pill that starts killing fleas in 30 minutes. Then put on a topical treatment such as Revolution or Advantage. Both are safe to use with Capstar. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot and soapy water. Vacuum all the furniture and carpets. A spray such as Indorex can be used to kill fleas in the home, or you can get the house flea bombed by an exterminator. I hope this helps!

I would recommend putting a topical flea medication such as Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution on Marmalate - all of these should be effective against lice as well. You should be able to get these from your vet, or order them online if you prefer - just make sure to get the correct size for your cat's weight.

Poor Winnie! We have to get rid of these pesky pests once and for all. I would recommend putting Winnie on either Advantage or Revolutionti rid he lice and fleas. Make sure to continue to give the medicaiton every 2 weeks until the lice/fleas are gone. I would make sure that Chiqui is on a really good flea control program. First, I would give her Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. I would also take her into the vet for a visit on Monday. When a cat has a bad flea allergy, they sometimes need steroids to stop the itchiness, which a vet can prescribe.

Hello and thank you for your question! Cat lice is species specific and will not infect you or any other species of animals you may have in your home. However, I would wash all of Chance's bedding, blankets and anything else he has come into contact with and wash all the areas he spends time in. Launder and wash what you can, but for items that can't be washed in a washing machine, you can place in a tight sealed bag for 4 weeks. All toys and other items like crates, litter boxes, and cat carriers should be disinfected. Your furniture and rugs, etc should all be washed and cleaned as well. All of these steps are necessary to prevent reinfection. However, most importantly, Chance should be on a monthly flea/tick preventative, like Fipronil or Selemectin Rx by your veterinarian each month to help kill the lice and prevent new lice from hatching. Poor Lilo! If there is any concern for flea allergy, treat for fleas even if you don't see them. Frontline or a similar product used regularly may help immensely. (a flea allergic animal does not have to be riddled with fleas to be itchy.... just 1 or 2 fleas will make a flea allergic animal feel super itchy and affect their skin).
