Cats itching after Advantage Multi, suspecting chewing lice. What now?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 13.2 lbs

I treated my cats with advantage multi and they are itching all the time. I believe it is chewing lice. I applied advantage on 8/26/17. Do the have to suffer for 30 days?

Hi and thank you for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Unfortunately Advantage Multi is not labeled for use in cases of chewing lice. It is indicated for fleas, ear mites, heart worm prevention, hookworms and roundworms in cats which may explain why they are still itching.

Frontline Plus is a good topical treatment that covers fleas, ticks, and chewing lice.

In order not to overload their systems, I would wait until 9/26/2017 to apply the Frontline Plus if you believe it is chewing lice, although I would have a veterinarian diagnosis this first. They may be itching because they have a flea allergy and sometimes when the fleas die off after product administration this can cause itching.

I would wait and see if the itching decreases in a few days with the advantage multi and if not, have them seen by a veterinarian.

Maybe you can bring one of the bugs in to your Vet to have them look at it to confirm it is lice.

You can use Frontline spray every 2 weeks or Revolution every 2 weeks. You can also bathe them in lime sulfur dip. The life cycle is 3-4 weeks so it will take 3-6 weeks to get rid of the infestation. You may just need to give the Advantage multi more time.

Please contact your Veterinarian to have the infestation confirm and to discuss the off label use of the above drugs. They can tell you if they are comfortable with you using a different product sooner than 30 days since they are familiar with their overall health.

I recommend you consider using a product called Capstar which is to kill a lot of fleas at once to complement a flea preventative product like Advantage. You can go ahead and give another dose of Advantage now as well. I would not give up on Advantage just yet. Continue to use it for now as this flea may be was a one time occurrence and the Advantage was still being effective. Another option is switching to Bravecto now though again Advantage may still be effective so it may be best to exhaust its use. Good luck and have a great day!

Cat still has ticks after Advantage Multi. What's safe to use now?

Yes, it's too soon to apply another topical medication. I suggest try a Seresto Collar (not Hartz or any of those other OTC collars). You can put that on now and it is good for 8 months for both fleas and ticks. Read the instructions to make sure you put it on correctly. My cat still has fleas after Frontline. Can I use Advantage II now?

Hi and thanks for your question. Yes, advantage 2 large cat can be used but not after frontline was just applied last week. Frontline is indicated for a month, so I would wait another 3 weeks until administering the Advantage 2 large cat. You run the risk of overloading her system otherwise. Why is my puppy still itching 24 hours after Advantage application?

Hello, thank you for your question about Lily. It is possible that Lily's itching could be due to the Advantage product. Advantage generally has an alcohol base to it and some dogs are more sensitive to this, they may begin itching or rubbing after application. I would recommend continuing to monitor Lily for the next 24 hours to see if the itching improves or resolves. If her symptoms continue I would recommend having her evaluated by your veterinarian to look for other possible causes of her itching such as skin infection. Hope this helps, good luck!

Why is my ferret still scratching and biting after flea treatment?

Hello, if the product you are using is not working, you might want to try Advantage Multi, but I would think between the drops you are using & the bathing, the fleas should be gone. You might also try completely changing out your enclosure, using a completely different substrate, just in case Mike is sensitive to what you are using now. My cat still has lice after shampoo. How do I treat it effectively?

I would recommend putting a topical flea medication such as Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution on Marmalate - all of these should be effective against lice as well. You should be able to get these from your vet, or order them online if you prefer - just make sure to get the correct size for your cat's weight.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, you may in about 5-6 days. However, I would highly recommend you use a stronger and likely more efficacious product. There are plenty of flea products in the market and a lot of them are very effective. I prefer Bravecto and Frontline plus. You can pick one of those products. The nice thing about Bravecto is that it is very effective and it is only applied once every 3 months. You can also use a product called Capstar along with one of the previously mentioned products which can help kill a lot of fleas at once. Remember to vacuum all the surfaces that have contact with your pup regularly. This is very likely going to work well. Good luck and have a great day!
