My dog had bladder surgery. Is red urine normal during her recovery?

It does take time for Little One's bladder to heal from the bladder stones, so yes you can still see some blood in her urine. She can bleed on and off after bladder surgery, but I would still monitor her. If the bleeding gets worse or she starts having difficulty urinating, I would contact your vet immediately. I hope she feels better soon!

Hi and thanks for posting! It can take anywhere from 10-14 days or sometimes a little longer before the bladder can heal after surgery and regain normal stream of urine. It is not uncommon for there to be a shorter urine stream or for patients that have had bladder surgery to urinate more frequently than usual. This should subside in about 1-2 weeks.

I would get her back in to see your vet as soon as possible. Some bleeding is normal after a cystotomy, but this does sound concerning. If she is not making any progress in other ways, such as having a good appetite, feeling like moving around, if she is vomiting or has diarrhea, I would get her seen right away. If she seems to be recovering well otherwise, aside from the blood, then getting her rechecked isn't quite so urgent.

Hello, thank you for your question about Hollie. If you have only noticed a small amount of blood in one episode of urination I would recommend continuing to monitor Hollie. If she continues to have blood in her urine or develops any other symptoms such as straining or small, frequent urinations it is possible that she may have developed a urinary tract infection and I would recommend having her evaluated by your veterinarian. Oh man! Poor Ray Ray! He’s had a rough couple weeks! So my guess is that it has to do with gravity. Blood in the urinary tract after these kinds of surgeries is common. I suspect the blood collects a bit at the tip of the penis but there is little urine making it all the way down there to flush it out. So it clots and comes out every once in a while. As long as they are small and not very frequent, I’m not very worried. If they are large or frequent, you should talk to your surgeon right away to see what they think. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely due to the surgery to some extent. Some degree of blood in the urine would be expected but not a lot. I do think that it warrants re-evaluation by the veterinarian who did the surgery to make sure that there is nothing wrong going on with the incision or surgical site as those are complicated surgeries. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Zoey! What a rough time she has had! I think it is a good sign that there is no evidence of urine leaking in to her abdomen 4 days after the 2nd surgery! Her bladder went through a lot of trauma because of that there is inflammation. She will take longer than an average cystotomy for that to occur. I would want the straining with small urine production to improve every few days. It may take 7-14 days for the straining ti subside. I would expect similar for the incontinence. As long as she is eating, drinking and happy be patient! Good luck!
