My dog has corneal edema. What's the prognosis for his cloudy eye?

A cloudy eye can be caused by many conditions, i am surprised your vet prescribed Steroids only- without any antibiotic drops as it is impossible to rule out an eye infection just by looking at the eye. my first choice of treatment would have been an antibiotic drop rather than steroids.

I am sorry to hear about your dog. I would recommend taking him in to the vet as soon as possible, including the emergency vet if your vet isn't open. This could be corneal edema or a corneal ulceration. We could also possibly have trauma within the eye that we cannot see due to the cloudiness of the cornea, such as bleeding of retinal vessels or trauma to the optic nerve and the earlier the eye is treated the better the chance of healing and preserving vision.

It seems like your dog has a corneal ulceration, which requires an immediate check up and treatment. The check up is essential to be able to determine the depth of the ulceration and decide appropriate treatment. Eye drops versus surgery are the two treatment options. I would have to examine the eye in-person, but it appears that Nala has corneal edema causing the cloudiness. This happens with trauma to the eye and infections. It is not a permanent change, but if there is enough damage it can form a scar. It's best to have Nala rechecked by your vet. They can stain the eye and look for any evidence of ulceration, or infection. I hope that helps and Nala gets better soon.

If there was no ulcer present, it's possible that the corneal edema is related to infection or glaucoma. There are a few inherited diseases that can cause corneal edema as well. If the current treatment is no longer helping you should recheck with your veterinarian. You may also want to ask about referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist who might be able to better determine what is causing the edema.

Blue and cloudy discoloration could be due to an inflammation and accumulation of fluid in the anterior chamber of the eye. It is impossible for us to tell whether the eye is improving or not as a physical examination would be needed. After surgery a certain grade of inflammation is expected anyway. I would recommend a check up to make sure there is no deterioration of the corneal indolent ulcer.

Hello. This appears to be corneal edema, which essentially causes thickening of cornea resulting in a decrease in clarity. I would revisit about this with your veterinarian as over time, corneal edema may lead to recurrent or chronic corneal erosions. A thorough ocular examination should be done, including measurement of intraocular pressures, fluorescein staining, a Schirmer tear test, & examination of intraocular structures to look for any underlying causes, including the possible use of the medication you are now using in the eye.
