Can I safely confine my cat to stop him from eating dangerous food?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would keep a lid on the fish tank and I would keep the birds in a separate room when you are not home. I would also keep the birds caged. You should be training the kitten to not jump on the bird cage and the fish tank. They make noise deterrents to scare a cat away from an area you do not want them to be. Be sure to provide plenty of outlets for Holly to play and be stimulated so she isn't bored and try to interact with the other animals. Good luck!

If he isn't then it may be hard to convince her. If you want to repost the types of food she is feeding we can try to provide you proof that the foods could cause a problem. Could you keep Oliver in your room and not allow his access to the open door? Bobby and Coco are adorable! I do recommend only feeding Bobby kitten food. This is a common problem where kittens will want the adult food. I would recommend once Coco is done with her food and she walks away to just pick it up. You are already feeding in different rooms so just by picking up the food should help. It sounds like you are trying as much as you can to make him more comfortable. Cats can certainly acquire frustrating behaviors due to stress, and it sounds like you had a recent change in the household (birth of the kittens) that may have triggered this behavior. It is certainly OK to restrict his access to just the bathroom with his food, water and litterbox for a few days. It may be hard for him, but I can understand that it is frustrating for you to have him urinating inappropriately around the house. You may consider consulting with your veterinarian about light sedative medications if he does not adjust to the change in your household. I hope this is helpful!

Charlie should be able to tolerate a very large dog style crate or a cat condo for days to a week or so. Cats often stay in similar sized cages while boarding, however be aware that cats confined will need litter changed several times daily and he would benefit from interactive toys. If possible, he may do better if allowed to be closed into a room vs a crate. Other options may be long term boarding if needed, if there is a cat facility near you with larger cages/condos available.
