How to stop clumping litter from sticking to my long-haired cat's fur?

A little added fiber or a daily pet probiotic can help firm up loose stools, however bringing a stool sample into the vet to rule out anything such as parasites or an underlying illness causing it is a good idea. In some cases, even normal stools can sometimes get stuck on long-haired cats. Gently trimming the area to make it less easy for stool to stick, or using a pet wipe after Pockey gets out of the litter box before the stool can dry may help make it easier to clean.

This is common in Persians and other long haired cats. You will need to keep her in a sanitary clip to prevent the stool from sticking to her hair. A groomer or vet can do the clip for your or you can learn to do it yourself. A sanitary clip is where you shave the hair around the anus and down both the back legs. I don't think she has an underlying medical issue with her balance but if you are worried you should have your vet check her.

It could be that your cat never learned to clean herself as a kitten, or just doesn't realize she has stuff stuck to her fur. Longer haired cats can also get things stuck easily. Keeping the area trimmed and wiping down her bottom with a pet wipe or baby wipe can help keep her cleaner.

It's worth a shot to see if it is just the brand rather than the litter format. As cats can be picky about litter types, be sure to do a gradual changeover to the new litter to prevent Olivia from avoiding it or using elsewhere to go potty. A litter mat outside of the box may also help wipe her feet and fur some, reducing the spread throughout the house.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Coco. I recommend that she has what is known as a sanitary clip. This is when the veterinarian or groomer shaves her hind end. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. From the photo there does not appear to be any bald spots, however, it is not a very close up view. Honestly, unless there are bald spots and/or she is scratching the area I would not be too concerned. If the problem persists though (like for a few months) then you should take her to your vet for an exam. Some reasons there could be changes in the hair coat: 1. Diet - the special diet she is eating may be causing some nutrient imbalance. You should talk to your vet about putting her on a supplement for her coat (like fish oils) as this may help. 2. Skin Allergies - even if she has never had any symptoms of allergies before, they can develop over time. If this was the case though, I would expect hair loss and/or scratching, redness of the skin, etc. If you are not seeing any of that then this is not as likely to be the problem. 3. Fleas - again, I would expect hair loss and scratching. If you are not noticing that, then this is also not very likely to be the problem. 4. Stress - even if you don't think your cat is stressed, she could be. Try to see if you could think of anything that could be causing stress like visiting family, stray cats hanging around outside, you got a new pet, new furniture, etc.... 5. Thyroid disease- either a low or high thyroid can cause problems with the hair coat. Your vet can do a blood test to check for this. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
