My cat has moving worms near her anus. Can I treat them at home?

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | spayed | 15 lbs

I am trying to diagnose what type of worm my cat has. I was able to see a clear, small piece that was still moving around her anus. There is dark, dried up matter around her anus as well. I am not sure if a vet visit is in order or if I can buy her the proper medicine.

There is a chance that you may be able to determine the type of worm that Sierra has and then treat with appropriate over the counter dewormers. A small, moving piece sounds most like a tapeworm segment, which typically resembles a grain of rice. These worms can be treated with praziquantel ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=35698 ) with 2 doses, 3 weeks apart. Other common parasites include roundworms, which resemble spaghetti, and hookworms, which are slightly flatter than spaghetti but can be similar in appearance. Both roundworms and hookworms can be treated with pyrantel pamoate ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=1430 ). With any deworming medication, be sure that you are dosing for Sierra's current body weight. If you are truly unsure about the type of worm present, it may be best to take a stool sample to Sierra's vet for a more conclusive diagnosis. I hope that all goes well!

My cat has moving worms near its rear. Is it tapeworms or maggots?

I suspect your cat may have tapeworms. The body segments of the worm contain the eggs and are passed in the feces. Fresh, moist segments are about 1/4 in long and capable of moving. Once dried, they resemble grains of rice or sesame seeds. Tapeworm segments can sometimes be found crawling in the fur around the anus of an infected cat. Treatment for tapeworms is a drug called praziquantal, which is available through your veterinarian. I suggest that you take your cat and a fresh fecal sample to your veterinarian for confirmation that your cat does indeed have tapeworms and not fly strike (maggots) which would be a much more serious condition.

The two main types of worms you can see with the human eye is tapeworms and roundworms. Since these don't look like tapeworms to you, purchase an over the counter dewormer for roundworms and give it to see to see if it helps. If you do take her in, make sure to get her vaccines done. Rabies vaccines are very important for any animals who has contact with people so you may consider having this done regardless. That is a lovely kitty you have there! If the worm you saw looked like a little squirmy grain of rice, then Cadbury has tapeworms. This is easily treated with a cat wormer that contains praziquantel. You should be able to get that from your vet, or over the counter from a pet shop. You can also order it over the internet. Drontal for cats would be such a wormer.

Hello. This is definitely a tapeworm. Go to https://www.chewy.com ( or check with your local pet retailer ) & pick up Bayer tapeworm de-wormer for cats. That will take care of the problem for now. It sounds like Saphira may have worms! If they look like grains of rice, then they are tapeworms. Tapeworms require praziquantel to kill, which is prescription only from the vet. You will have to take her in to the vet. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends to afford the vet, you can see if you vet accepts payment plans, you can apply for Care Credit online, or you can see if there is a low cost clinic in your area.
