My cat won't eat his urinary diet after a UTI. What should I do?

Hello, sorry to hear about Arki. This could be the case and it may take him a day or so to resume his appetite. However, if Arki is not able to urinate, has gone greater than 4-6 hours with urinating, is making frequent visits to the litter box and is unable to produce urine, or is sitting in the litter box and vocalizing then he should be evaluated immediately as these are signs he may be obstructed and would require emergency veterinary attention. If he is obstructed, then Arki is unlikely to want to eat anything as this is painful condition. If he is urinating, then as his UTI begins to clear, he will likely resume his normal appetite. Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I am more concerned about the fact that she is not eating well and that needs to be further addressed as it is unlikely to be due to a urinary tract infection. I recommend that you have Luchadora reevaluated by your veterinarian on Saturday for further assessment and treatment. Keep in mind that if she is not feeling well, they may not proceed with vaccines that day. You may take in a urine sample that day. When cats are blocked for a long time they can have elevated kidney and potassium values that with IV fluids and relieving the obstruction the elevations usually return to normal MOST of the time. Was blood work done when he was hospitalized? I would have him rechecked and blood work ran since it has been 2 days with out eating. Cats shouldn't go longer than that as they can get a secondary liver problem from not eating. If you changed his diet to a prescription urinary diet consider going back to his old food until he is eating and urinating well then trying the prescription food again. There are also other brands to try. I wish you the best!

Hill's non-prescription food is safe, and it's a highly recommend food by vets. There is absolutely no scientific research saying it isn't safe, everything you are reading is anecdotal with no evidence to back it up. It's important that your cat stays on a urinary diet to keep him from getting stones again, so I'd recommend giving him Royal Canin cat urinary SO. It's a high quality food, and he may like eating it. I would have him checked out by a vet about this weight loss, however. In old cats, the weight loss could be due to a medical illness, such as hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, diabetes, or even cancer. He could also have teeth problems making it painful for him to eat. He could not be feeling well from those, causing him to not eat, so it may not be the food, it could be an illness. I recommend having a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis to check his teeth and to see how his organs are functioning to determine if there is a medical cause behind this weight loss and anorexia. Should one be found, the vet can treat him for it. I would have him seen by a vet today or tomorrow.

Hi and thank you for submitting your question about Moustachio (neat name!). His lack of urination for 12 hours is concerning. If he really has gone 12 hours without any urination, you will need to take him back into your veterinarian's office. Male cats do tend to get mucous plugs or stones which can block the urethra and lead to difficulty or the inability to urinate. Not eating or drinking anything either in 12hours is also a concern that needs to be addressed today with the veterinarian who saw and treated Moustachio yesterday. I hope this has helped. I'm so sorry to hear that Lily has not been eating. I would recommend trying canned tuna, chicken broth, and buying one each of several flavors of cat food to entice most kitties to eat. Unfortunately, sometimes not eating is not due to pickiness or a lack of interest in flavor, but due to sickness. The body will start to break itself down to use for energy after only 24 hours without nutrition. A week is too long for her to go without eating safely and I would recommend taking Lily to her vet to be evaluated. I hope this helps.

I'm extremely concerned she is barely eating and drinking. It's actually quite serious when a cat won't eat as they will develop a fatty liver over time. A fatty liver is fatal without treatment. She has to see a vet now. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants.
