My cat has pale gums but seems normal. Could she still be anemic?

I noticed my cat has pale pink gums, I freaked out as that could mean she’s anemic, I did check for symptoms of anemia, but she does not have any symptoms such as being lethargic, rapid breathing, loss of appetite, I adopted her when she was 3 months old and she just turned 5 yrs old last week so I’m familiar with her behavior, she does not display any unusual behavior that would be a cause for concern such as those I listed, so I was wondering could she still be anemic?

Cat gums can normally appear more pale than you would expect on a dog. Also, pale mucous membranes is not a great indicator of anemia, because the color can be influenced by other factors such as blood pressure and environmental temperature.

Pictures are not a great way to visualize colors, but this does not seem unusually pale to me. If you feel like you are noticing a drastic change in the color, then it is possible that something is off in her body, but not likely if she is otherwise acting normal. The conditions that cause pale mucous membranes would cause other clinical signs such as weight loss, decrease in appetite, and/or decrease in activity.

I think you have little to worry about right now, but it's difficult for me to tell for sure without examining her. The best way to make sure she is healthy is to schedule a wellness exam with your vet. They will be able to help you further with this concern.

    Unfortunately it's so difficult to tell from a picture! I actually think this color looks fairly normal. Usually cats who are significantly anemic also have a decrease in appetite and are lethargic or weak, so if Chandler is showing those symptoms I'd be a little more concerned. Anemia can have many underlying causes and it's important to determine what the cause is to know how to treat, so it is not something that can typically be treated from home.

White gums in any animal is concerning as it can be a sign of shock or anemia. Based on your attached photos, I would not be alarmed about the color of the gums. They are not pale, they are an adequate pink color. Unless you notice other changes such as weakness or lethargy or vomiting, then I would not worry and just monitor for further changes.

Hi! So sorry to hear that Paris is not feeling well. It sounds like Paris is anemic based on the color of her gums and the fact that she does not feel well which means that she is clinically affected. I recommend that you have Paris evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible to figure out what is wrong and start therapy for it. At the very least, she could have bloodwork done to see if she truly is anemic and go from there. Keeping my fingers crossed that evrything goes well!!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This can be very normal in pink nosed cats! The color can change with ambient temperature, with activity or when stressed (gets more pink). It can indicate anemia but cats that are anemic also have pale gums and act sick. If her nose still gets its normal pink color she is likely fine. My own cats nose does this. If you are unsure about her gum color, have your Vet check her to be sure. I hope this helps!

You generally can't tell from the ears and nose if a pet is anemic. You need to examine the gums. If the gums look pale to you or if you are still concerned, your veterinarian can answer the question about anemia very quickly with a physical exam and a few drops of blood (if needed). My senior cat has anemia & pale gums. Can iron or homemade food help?
The pale gums do signify anemia that could be related to kidney disease, cancer, bone marrow disease and other significant issues as well. I think your ideas are good and could be beneficial although they do not address the underlying problem. However good nutrition is always a good thing. Cats that are hard to handle are challenging and diagnostics are the only way to know what is the cause of the anemia. Certainly it is concerning that she did not do well with sedation. You may contact her vet and ask about an option of an oral light sedative called Gabapentin that tends to work well for aggressive cats without the side effects of stronger sedatives. It doesn’t work for every cat but I find it to be effective more often than not. Your vet will decide if this is an option based upon your pet’s overall health and previous medical history. Pale gums is a sign of anemia, and losing hair is a sign of itching. If Joker has a heavy flea infestation, that would cause him to become anemic and lose hair. I would catch him, and take him into a vet today. Anemia is serious and needs to be treated right away. The vet can determine if it is fleas causing the anemia and hair loss, or if there is another cause, and treat him appropriately.

My 8-week puppy has pale gums. Is she anemic? Should I be concerned?
The gums do look pale. Anemia in a puppy is usually caused by fleas or intestinal parasites. Please use a flea comb to remove any fleas. You can dip it in warm soapy dishwater to rinse it off and kill the fleas. I'm glad you are taking her in for an exam tomorrow. Please bring a fecal sample also so they can do a exam for parasites. If she's feeling good and playing she should be fine, I would not have her be too active, let her rest since they get tired and weak from anemia.
