My cat is losing weight, confused, and has bloody stool. What's wrong?

Poor Sophie, she looks very sweet. It sounds to me like she is having serious digestive issues and needs to be examined by a veterinarian. She could have developed inflammatory bowel disease or some other internal issue causing the blood stools. She likely is pooping outside the litter box because she has increased urgency to go and can't hold it as long due to a medical issue. It is unlikely the pooping outside the box will resolve until the medical issue is addressed. Your veterinarian may need to do blood work to figure out what is causing the problem. Sophie may need a special prescription diet or a medication like Flagyl to help resolve the issue. If she is drooling it's likely she may have dental disease so your veterinarian can examine her mouth and address the problem. With her balance being off I'm also concerned she may be in pain and require prescription pain medication. Please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for cats so you will need to have these prescribed by a veterinarian. Poor Baby! It sounds like she has something more serious going on with her, and it could be that her anorexia, vomiting, and blood in the stool could be caused by GI tumors, GI polyps, irritable bowel disease, or a foreign body, among other causes. I would take her back into the vet for a physical exam, blood tests, a urinalysis, and possibly x-rays to diagnose what is causing her symptoms so treatment can be started. She may have something that's treatable, and her current symptoms do not necessarily mean she is dying. Have her seen by a vet in the morning.

I recommend taking Princess to a vet. As cats age they can develop multiple different systemic diseases which they can develop these symptoms. The most common being diabetes, kidney disease and hyperthyroidism. Your vet can run blood work to see if she has any of these and discuss treatment with you. This bleeding indicates a severe colitis (inflammation of the colon). This could be from a severe infection, or cancer. The sleeping constantly is worrying that she is losing so much blood that she is becoming anemic and/or very dehydrated. Given the severity of the problems you are seeing, Misty really needs veterinary treatment, because there is nothing that can be done for her at home. I recommend taking her to the vet as soon as possible. Sometimes, these problems can be easily cleared with appropriate medication and other treatment. I hope that helps and Misty gets better soon.

Bring a stool sample to be checked for intestinal parasites. Other causes for abnormal stool and weight loss are: feline leukemia, FIV, feline infectious peritonitis, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, inflammatory bowel disease or intestinal lymphoma (cancer). Poor girl. With those symptoms, I would highly recommend a vet visit as soon as possible. There are many different possible causes and the symptoms you're describing span multiple organ systems, so I can't give you a very accurate "most likely" list. The vet will start with a detailed physical exam and go from there, likely including some blood work and x-rays.

Oh dear, this sounds potentially serious. I recommend taking Phoebe right in to the vet. If Phoebe is not eating or drinking, and has bloody stool, she could quickly become dehydrated. Furthermore, she has had to be expending a great deal of energy nursing those kittens, and I'm concerned about her lethargy. Your vet will likely want to check a fresh fecal sample for intestinal parasites, particularly due to her pot belly and bloody stool. They will be able to give her fluids to combat dehydration, and may also recommend bloodwork to check her organ function and watch for anemia since she's losing blood through her stool.
