Why is my cat weak and tired with recurring digestive issues?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

My cat often gets these periods of time where he can't keep food down we put him onto dry food an he is keeping that down ok now but looks very weak and tired. We have previously took him to the vets over this problem where they thought he had eaten something so operated on him but found nothing and had no explanation for what was wrong with him and why this keeps happening. Does anyone have any idea?

If you have not yet, I recommend your cat getting a comprehensive blood panel done, as well as x-rays and possibly an ultrasound to check for physical abnormalities such as a stricture that could be a cause. Also I recommend getting some specialty bloodwork done for your cat, through the Texas A&M Gastrointestinal Lab. Any vet can draw the blood and send it off, the forms are easily found on their website. This will check for nutrition absorption deficiencies, pancreatic enzyme levels and other factors that could be contributing to your cat's condition.

Poor Rey! Chronic GI problems like this can be frustrating to deal with. There are a number of things that could cause recurring episodes of vomiting like this, along with lethargy and tiredness - some possibilities would include chronic pancreatitis, cholangiohepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease (which often causes vomiting only, without any diarrhea in cats), a food allergy or intolerance, or a systemic illness like chronic kidney disease or hyperthyroidism.

I would recommend taking Rey back to your vet for a follow-up visit to discuss what to do next to try and diagnose the problem. Personally, I would suggest general blood work (CBC and chemistry panel), a GI panel to test for pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, etc., and possibly a diet trial with hypoallergenic or prescription GI diet. Once a diagnosis is made, your vet can discuss treatment recommendations depending on what is found.

Poor Sachi! Significant weight loss and inappetence are certainly a major concern. I'm glad to hear that his blood work (I assume a CBC, chemistry and T4?) was unremarkable. However, foreign body intestinal obstruction/blockages, intestinal malabsorption issues that can cause inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), chronic pancreatitis, or cancerous processes, do not necessarily cause changes on screening blood tests. If Sachi has not yet had abdominal x-rays or an ultrasound, consider talking to your vet about these tests as his next diagnostic step. If he has a foreign body obstructing his intestines, this is a surgical emergency, and these tests would be helpful in obtaining a diagnosis. If pancreatitis, IBD or EPI are more highly suspected, consider talking to your vet about testing for vitamins B12 and folate, as well as TLI and fPLI. I hope this helps!

My cat has gastroenteritis. What to do if she's still lethargic?

If no abnormalities were found on the x-rays but she is still lethargic despite treatment, I would recommend an abdominal ultrasound to see if there are any other abnormalities and then go from there. In older cats, I worry about intestinal lymphoma but it is possible this could be inflammatory bowel disease as well. However, there is still additional testing that needs to be done to help rule out other causes of Stella's symptoms. Changing the diet to a prescription low fat intestinal diet like Hills low fat I/D may be something to consider as well but I would discuss this with your veterinarian first. My cat has diarrhea, vomiting, and is tired. When to see a vet?

I would recommend that you have Alfie examined by a veterinarian. His symptoms could be caused by food intolerance, food allergies, intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal lymphoma, hyperthyroidism, systemic disease (liver, kidney, pancreas, diabetes), among others. After a thorough physical exam and review of his history, the vet may recommend bloodwork, intestinal parasite screening, or ultrasound to determine what could be the cause. They may also recommend that you do food trial for possible food allergies.

Why is my senior cat sick, vomiting, and weak with normal bloodwork?

If all his bloodwork was normal that rules out kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, etc. If your vet did not test for hyperthyroidism than a test should be done. An x-ray and/or ultrasound is defintely needed and will, hopefully, provide more information. He could have an infection, cancer, or obstruction/foreign body to name a few other possibilities. If he is not able to keep food down, I am not sure waiting until Friday is a good idea. He may continue to weaken and may become dehydrated. If your vet can't take an x-ray then you could consider taking him to an emergency clinic or another vet that can. An anti-vomiting injection may be helpfull if your vet didn't give him one. I hope that his problem is diagnosed and treated soon!

Your cat should be examined by a veterinarian for a work up and treatment. There are a lot of diseases that could cause those signs including diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, gastrointestinal issues, thyroid disease, and cardiac disease. Your vet may need to run lab-work and take X-rays to diagnose.

My cat has ileus and won't eat. Could it be IBD? What tests now?

I'm sorry to hear your cat is having GI issues. How was your cat diagnosed with pancreatitis? If the remainder of bloodwork was normal and the fPLI was positive, I would consider X-rays and possibly an abdominal ultrasound for more information. Pancreatitis can be a chronic condition that requires diet changes, B12 supplementation and long-term medications. Pancreatitis can be concurrent with another underlying GI issue, such as IBD or lymphoma. Ultrasound can give more information, but these conditions can only be definitively diagnosed with intestinal biopsies. As the issue isn't resolving, I would recommend your cat be re-evaluated and further diagnostics potentially fine, either by your regular veterinarian or an internal medicine specialist. Good luck!

Why is my new kitten's stomach bloated, lethargic, and underweight?

The most common cause is usually intestinal parasite infection. Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Amaru should be dewormed. This will likely need to be repeated in 2, 4 and 6 weeks. An exam can be done to confirm good health or to diagnose and treat any pre-existing conditions. Consider having him tested for FeLV and FIV. This is done with a quick in-clinic blood test. Feed a food quality canned kitten food. If he checks out healthy, discuss an appropriate vaccination plan with your veterinarian.
