My cat's eye is watery after sleeping. Is it normal or vet time?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 5 years old | 10 lbs

My cat’s left eye sometimes gets slightly weepy, usually after sleeping for a while. There’s no discoloration in the “discharge”, just tears-the eye seems normal otherwise, and she exhibits no overt signs of sickness (energy, appetite, and litter box habits unchanged). I have no problem taking her to the vet, but wouldn’t want to subject her to the cold weather unless it’s really necessary. What should I watch for in order to escalate?

fbIf you notice squinting, rubbing at the eye, increased discharge, redness, decreased vision, or if the eye appears to be protruding, please get Rose to a vet right away. Do not apply anything to the eye without checking with your vet first. You can clean underneath the eye with a cloth dipped in clean warm water twice a day to help prevent buildup.

Great question! Given that you are only seeing this occasionally after sleeping for a while, it could simply be normal discharge. Humans can get this discharge as well during sleeping, as you might occasionally wake up with "sleep" crusted in the corners of your eyes. I would watch for this discharge to continue throughout the day, not just after sleeping, an increase in the discharge, red eye, swollen eye or protrusion of the third eyelid, and the discharge turning a greenish color. Those are signs of an infection, and then I would have Rose seen by a vet. Good luck, I hope this helps!

I wouldn't recommend it. If she has eye discharge, I'd recommend using a moistened clean cloth or paper towel (using lukewarm tap water) to wipe it away and then another clean dry one to dry off the area. I'd also recommend talking to her vet to see if there's anything that can be done to help with the discharge. Some Persian's just have discharge, but she could also have dry eye that making the discharge worse. Good luck!

My cat has dry sleep in her eye. Is this normal or a concern?

Cats can get the sleep discharge that humans can when they wake up in the morning. As long as Nala's eyes are not red, she doesn't have excessive discharge, and it's not greenish in color, I would not be worried about it. It is always ideal, however, to have any eye problem checked out by a vet just to be safe, and you can have Nala seen by a vet this week for a health check.

Why does my cat's eye leak and blink excessively after sleeping?

If he is blinking this eye excessively also, then I would recommend taking him to your vet to have the eye examined. It is very likely he has an eye infection and in need of antibiotic eye ointment to help clear things up. Eye infections are common in cats and can be caused by a mild scratch or ulcer on the eye. They can also be caused by mild viral infections (i.e. Herpesvirus, Calicivirus). I hope your furry friends eye issue resolves soon! Best wishes and take care.

I see many cats like Lottie who have mild brownish eye discharge. Most of the time this is normal. Check Lottie's eyes for any redness on the eye itself or the surround tissues. Watch for any squinting or green/yellow discharge. If you see any of the above signs, it could indicate an infection or scratch on the cornea. Take her to the veterinarian if you suspect something abnormal.

Wet white spot in cat's eye, no discomfort. Should I be concerned?

Gently try to wipe the eye to see if that is just some discharge. If it does not come out, it may be a mass and she should see her veterinarian. If it is discharge, as long as she seems normal, you may monitor her for a few days to see if this is a one time thing. If it progresses or worsens, have her seen by her veterinarian. My cat's eye waters frequently with no irritation. Vet visit needed?

It’s always best to have the eye checked but if he’s not squinting, no redness or discomfort, no green or yellow discharge then you should be ok to monitor the eye at home. Some eyes water when the tear ducts are plugged or from mild allergies. Do take him in if this continues or worsens.
