Cat sick after Metacam: vomiting, diarrhea, not eating. What to do?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

My cat took Metacam for the first time on thursday afternoon. He began vomiting and had diarrhea about 6 hours after the first dose and was lethargic. I have not given him a second dose. We are now 48 hours later and he cannot eat a moderate amount of food without bringing it back up. He is back to his old self mood wise, but can only keep down about a tablespoon of wet food at a time. My vet is unreachable at the moment.

This class of medication can cause damage to the lining of the stomach and intestines. This appears to be the case for Kingston. It's good that you stopped the medication and I would not give it again until you are able to talk with your vet.

The damage done to the stomach and intestines takes a while to resolve, so it's understandable that she is still experiencing some issues. It may take a couple of weeks until this is fully resolved.

This does not appear to be serious at this time, so it's best to continue feeding him small meals. It's best if you can break the meals into multiple small meals throughout the day. These conditions actually heal better when there is food in the stomach, but they will definitely feel nauseous with moderate to large meals.

    Hi there! I’m sorry to hear Winston isn’t feeling well. I recommend discontinuing the Metacam, as it is what we call a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and can be very hard on the gastrointestinal track. If WInston continues to have diarrhea and or gets worse after stopping the medication he should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Hopefully this helps and Winston has a speedy recovery!

Oral Metacam should be ideally stopped and as a first approach I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice lethargy or inappetence. It could be a side effect of the medication or it could be related to something else like stress. I recommend to call your vet today and follow their recommendations. A bland diet may also help. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

My cat had a Metacam overdose. What symptoms should I watch for?
That may result in gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting, diarrhoea even with fresh or digested blood in it (due to ulcers) or may lead to kidney failure ( which can happen acutely). Metacam is a liquid and gets rapidly absorbed ( so make her sick is usually not very useful). If you notice any of signs such as vomiting ,diarrhoea ,lethargy ,depression ,inappetence,increased drinking level increase urination or complete cessation of it, then I would recommend (even after several hours or few days from ingestion) to take her to your veterinarian for a check up.

Hello. As a general rule of thumb, we will begin to see gastrointestinal problems with Metacam if a dog receives 4-5 times the regular therapeutic dose. In Louis' case, he is just at that point. His gums look to be a nice pink color, but he may still be experiencing a fairly intensive gastroenteritis. He may need some stomach protectants & anti-nausea medication to help him get over this, so please call your veterinarian as soon as you can. He should feel much better once he has some medication to treat his symptoms. I hope Louis is feeling better soon & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Cat's diarrhea worse on meds, now weak. Should I give Pedialyte?
I am sorry Damian does not feel well. I would recommend recontacting the vet to let them know Damian feels worse. Typically metronidazole works with in 24-48 hours. Typically if he is having liquid diarrhea he is not constipated. I would make sure a fecal is negative for parasites like coccidia. He might need deworming for coccidia since he is you. I would feed him the new food and you can start with a small amount of pedialyte however if he is still not improving I recommend taking him back to a veterinarian for more testing like bloodwork.

These signs might be compatible with a pancreatic disease (usually an inflammation). Often gastrointestinal inflammation is associated as well. Unfortunately pain killers would be required. I would suggest not to give any more food at this stage, but only water available. I am afraid there is not anything else that you can do rather than keep Maus indoors without any stress until you take her to your vet. I am sorry to hear your cat is not feeling well. If this medication was prescribed by your veterinarian and your cat is still vomiting despite the medication then I would seek veterinary care immediately. If the medication was NOT prescribed by your veterinarian then please do not give any more, and take your cat in for evaluation. You do not mention how old the kitty is-any number of issues could be going on. A foreign body obstruction in the intestinal tract, a gastrointestinal infection, dietary indiscretion, a cancerous process, even renal failure can cause the symptoms you have noted. Your cat needs a thorough physical exam and your vet May recommend some diagnostics such as xrays and bloodwork. I hope your kitty feels better soon.
