Dog ate Metacam. Vomiting, lethargic, pale gums. Is it delayed?

Oral Metacam should be ideally stopped and as a first approach I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice lethargy or inappetence. That may result in gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting, diarrhoea even with fresh or digested blood in it (due to ulcers) or may lead to kidney failure ( which can happen acutely). Metacam is a liquid and gets rapidly absorbed ( so make her sick is usually not very useful). If you notice any of signs such as vomiting ,diarrhoea ,lethargy ,depression ,inappetence,increased drinking level increase urination or complete cessation of it, then I would recommend (even after several hours or few days from ingestion) to take her to your veterinarian for a check up.

A one time early dose is unlikely to be problematic, but I would recommend that you don’t redose for at least another 24 hours. If she seems comfortable than you can wait for 36 hours and use the gabapentin. Monitor for any signs of nausea, vomiting, or dark tarry stools. Hi, I see you've posted again...you have confirmed that this is a massive overdose of meloxicam for a dog that size and it would definitely cause her to be lethargic. Overdoses are most concerning for causing stomach and/or intestinal ulcers/bleeding. It can also cause significant damage to the kidneys. For these reasons, I recommend you take Polly to the vet immediately. There are medications and treatments that can keep this from getting worse and it's imperative that they are given soon. However, it's worth double-checking the syringe. Liquid meloxicam is usually given with a small 1ml syringe. The 1ml may be written as 1.0ml, which could be confused with 10. This class of medication can cause damage to the lining of the stomach and intestines. This appears to be the case for Kingston. It's good that you stopped the medication and I would not give it again until you are able to talk with your vet. The damage done to the stomach and intestines takes a while to resolve, so it's understandable that she is still experiencing some issues. It may take a couple of weeks until this is fully resolved. This does not appear to be serious at this time, so it's best to continue feeding him small meals. It's best if you can break the meals into multiple small meals throughout the day. These conditions actually heal better when there is food in the stomach, but they will definitely feel nauseous with moderate to large meals. I hope that helps and Kingston gets better soon.

Since this was not quite double the appropriate dose your dog should be ok. Do not give another dose for at least 48 hours. Make sure Evie has access to plenty of fresh water. Hello. So sorry to hear that Goliath is having this issue. I would recommend you STOP giving the Meloxicam right away and I would honestly take him in to an emergency vet clinic to be seen right away. I think his dose of Meloxicam is quite high and it may be upsetting his stomach and could be causing some damage to his kidneys. With my calculations he should have been getting 7.5mg once a day, not twice. I would recommend he go in for some bloodwork to check his kidney values and get some additional medications to protect his stomach lining. If his kidney values are elevated he may need to be hospitalized so he can be on fluids to flush out his kidneys. I don't want to scare you but this could be a pretty serious issue. I wouldn't wait too long to have him seen. The longer you wait, the more damage that could be done to his body. I hope this was helpful. I am hoping for the best for Goliath. Dr. Amber
