My cat had a Metacam overdose. What symptoms should I watch for?

I accidently gave my cat too much metacam, I gave 15ml when I was supposed to give 3ml. Will this kill my cat

That may result in gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting, diarrhoea even with fresh or digested blood in it (due to ulcers) or may lead to kidney failure ( which can happen acutely). Metacam is a liquid and gets rapidly absorbed ( so make her sick is usually not very useful). If you notice any of signs such as vomiting ,diarrhoea ,lethargy ,depression ,inappetence,increased drinking level increase urination or complete cessation of it, then I would recommend (even after several hours or few days from ingestion) to take her to your veterinarian for a check up.

Metac can cause gastrointestinal upset and kidney problems with overdosed. I would stop the medication now and call the veterinarian who prescribed it. They may chose to have you bring in Mia, or may provide a different medication.

Other signs would include;
Dirrhoea
Inappetabce
Blood in vomit
Increase in drinking
Increase in urination

In cats it is very difficult to predict how they will react to a metacam overdose, some will be fine, others will have serious side effects just from a slight overdose. most chances are she will be fine as your vet told you, but you need to watch for a few symptoms such as vomiting, lack of appetite, increased thirst and urination and lethargy. if any of those occur it could be related to the metacam and in such a case you would need to take Cassle to the vet ASAP.

It's good that you stopped the medication and I would not give it again until you are able to talk with your vet. The damage done to the stomach and intestines takes a while to resolve, so it's understandable that she is still experiencing some issues. It may take a couple of weeks until this is fully resolved. This does not appear to be serious at this time, so it's best to continue feeding him small meals. It's best if you can break the meals into multiple small meals throughout the day. These conditions actually heal better when there is food in the stomach, but they will definitely feel nauseous with moderate to large meals. I hope that helps and Kingston gets better soon.

Dog ate Metacam. Vomiting, lethargic, pale gums. Is it delayed?

Hello. As a general rule of thumb, we will begin to see gastrointestinal problems with Metacam if a dog receives 4-5 times the regular therapeutic dose. In Louis' case, he is just at that point. His gums look to be a nice pink color, but he may still be experiencing a fairly intensive gastroenteritis. He may need some stomach protectants & anti-nausea medication to help him get over this, so please call your veterinarian as soon as you can. He should feel much better once he has some medication to treat his symptoms. I hope Louis is feeling better soon & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

My dog has diarrhea and vomiting after taking Metacam. Is this normal?

Oral Metacam should be ideally stopped and as a first approach I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice lethargy or inappetence. My cat with kidney issues got too much Meloxicam. Vet needed?

Unfortunately this is a very large dose for his size. Also, if he has kidney problems he could be even more sensitive than normal cats. I would have your vet or your local emergency take a look at him. They may want to check his bloodwork to ensure his kidney values look okay and also make sure he is able to pass irons. If he is blocked and cannot urinate then This can also cause more issues with his kidneys. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better soon.

My dog is lethargic after taking meloxicam. Is it an overdose?

Hi, I see you've posted again...you have confirmed that this is a massive overdose of meloxicam for a dog that size and it would definitely cause her to be lethargic. Overdoses are most concerning for causing stomach and/or intestinal ulcers/bleeding. It can also cause significant damage to the kidneys. For these reasons, I recommend you take Polly to the vet immediately. There are medications and treatments that can keep this from getting worse and it's imperative that they are given soon. However, it's worth double-checking the syringe. Liquid meloxicam is usually given with a small 1ml syringe. The 1ml may be written as 1.0ml, which could be confused with 10.
