My cat threw up a hairball, now vomiting clear liquid. Is he sick?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 16 lbs

My cat has thrown up about 6 times since 5pm. I did find a hairball that he must have thrown up before 5 when I got home, but now he won't stop throwing up clear liquid. He does seem a little lethargic and uncomfortable.

I recommend having Kitten seen by his veterinarian based on the symptoms you are describing. He may just have some gastrointestinal upset but there is also the possibility for something more serious such as a foreign body.

HI, I am sorry to hear about Hops. Very good to hear that he is well otherwise. But all of this vomiting, even on an empty stomach is very concerning. He may have ingested something over the weekend while you were away that was toxic or that is causing an obstruction in his intestinal tract. Vomiting and anorexia is very concerning in any cat. This is not caused by stress. He has a medical problem (unfortunately) and needs to be evaluated by his veterinarian as soon as possible. Best of luck to you and Hops.

I strongly recommend getting your cat seen by your vet right away. Lethargy is a worrying sign after such an incident and she must continue to eat or she can develop liver disease in a matter of days. That's definitely concerning. Bombay could have something stuck in his intestines, an intestinal parasite, or even a metabolic problem. I would recommend getting him to the clinic this week for an exam and some x-rays to see if they can find a cause. He could also have vomited once because of eating something strange or a virus, and the vomiting itself irritated his stomach so he keeps vomiting - sometime treatment with fluids and an anti-vomiting medication is all that is needed to settle these guys down, but it's important to do testing first to make sure nothing else is going on. It sounds as your cat is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

I recommend getting your cat seen by your vet or an emergency vet right away. Cats need to eat, if they go more than a few days without eating they can develop serious liver problems which can be fatal. Continuous vomiting for so many hours is very exhausting and dehydrating, so your kitten likely needs some medical intervention to get better. Your vet will do an exam, labwork, possibly x-rays, and based on these results, your vet will have a better idea what is going on and can better advise you about treatment options.

There are many, many potential causes of intermittent vomiting in cats. It could be a food sensitivity, partial obstruction, kidney or liver disease, or hairball. I would recommend starting by having your vet perform a physical exam. From there they might recommend checking some lab work and/or taking x-rays. If Butterscotch is indoor/outdoor a fecal analysis to check for parasites might also be recommended.

My cat frequently throws up food and liquid. Hairball or serious?

It's probably something more serious. chronic vomiting can be caused by various conditions (foreign body, pancreatitis, lymphoma, IBD and more...), you will need to take her to the vet in order to get checked and have a blood test done as a first step to try and find out what is causing this.
