My pet vomited blood after Azithromycin. What to expect at vet?

Because he threw up two hours after you gave him the medication, the majority of the medication should have been absorbed. I it may be a reaction to the medication or there could have been something else alreadybtherr that just didn’t show it self yet such as an infection. If you are displeased with your vet then you can seek a second opinion but i would give the vet a call or schedule a recheck to see if they want to change medications or do blood work to address the vomiting now. Since there is blood in the vomit I would recommend getting him rechecked to make sure it does not continue and he doesn’t get dehydrated from it

If the medication had caused the vomiting, I would have expected it to cause vomiting days ago when you started it. That leads me to believe it is less likely related to the medication and more likely related to something else. That being said, double check that you are giving the correct amount and do shake the bottle well each time you give it. Just like in people, there are dozens of reasons vomiting occurs including: infection, dietary indiscretion (eating that piece of plant or human food, or dead mouse), GI foreign body (eating that hair band which is now causing problems), toxin, non specific nausea, diet change or new treat, and the list goes on. If it was just the three times in a row, I would just withhold food and water for 2 hours, then reinteoduce water. If she holds that down well, offer a small bit of food 8-12 hours after the last episode of vomiting. Don’t repeat tonight’s dose of medication. I am concerned in the back of my mind that something else is going on since her appetite had started decreasing. Is it related to the disease we are treating with the doxycycline or some other problem? Certainly if the vomiting continues or she is not ready to eat in the next 24 hours, or you see any new signs, please head to your vet or an emergency vet for re-valuation. AZO tablets are not recommended for dogs and cats, although a single standard dose would probably not be toxic. It’s possible that Zephyr is vomiting secondary to what is now a kidney infection, or that his straining is caused by prostate disease or bladder stones. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian. They can check Zephyr’s prostate and check a urine sample.

You should not give any medications and especially human medications without a direct prescription from the vet treating Kitsu. I strongly recommend you contact the vets office and advise them of the new symtpoms, although some vomiting after antibiotics can be quite common t may also indicate she has not fully recovered. A probiotic supplement can eb helpful also to reabalnce the gut following oral antibiotics.

Poor Mac! I recommend to call his veterinarian who may ask to see him again or may recommend medications. It possible the antibiotic has upset his tummy but it’s also possible something else is going on. You can switch his diet to boiled white meat chicken and plain boiled white rice for the next few days. If he continues to be sick, he should see his veterinarian.
