Why does my cat vomit at night after eating her wet and dry food?

Poor Sweetie! In older cats, I would be concerned that the vomiting is caused by kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, a foreign body, or intestinal lymphoma. I would take her into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, a urinalysis, x-rays, and possibly an ultrasound to determine what is causing her vomiting. Once the cause is found, the vet can recommend a possible treatment.

But you first have to differentiate whethere whether Coix is vomting (obvious retching and forceful expulsion) or regurgitating (undigested food just seems to come out without much effort). Vomiting can be caused by inflammatory bowel disease, megaesophagus (typically causes regurgitation), a parasitic infection (not as common), or even an underlying congenital disorder. Most of these conditions are treatable. You should first start with some diagnostic testing to gather more information on your specific pets condition. In general, you can continue to feed smaller portions and go with an easily digestible diet such as limited ingredient diets (i.e. Iams, Purina, Evo). It may be a dietary intolerance to the Science Diet food. You can try switching to a different brand or try feeding wet food instead of dry. If Gucci still vomits after trying a different food, then there may be another cause for the vomiting, such as hairballs, acid reflux, eating too fast, or even disorders with the stomach or intestines that delay digestion. You can discuss these possibilities with your vet, and they may recommend medications or diagnostics such as ultrasound or a barium study to see if things are moving through his system with the normal speed or not.

In an otherwise healthy cat that has chronic vomiting episodes, it sounds like Rigby may have a condition called inflammatory bowel disease. This is common in cats and is difficult to diagnose (requires an intestinal biopsy). It's possible Luna may just have some minor GI upset, or she is going too long in between meals if this has only happened twice and she is otherwise normal and happy. Other possibilities can include something such as a hairball that is leading to vomiting. Offering a bland meal after she vomits, or increasing the number of meals she gets per day may help with anything minor. If the vomiting continues, worsens, she shows other signs of illness, or you are just very concerned about it, it is always best to schedule a veterinary visit to rule out more serious issues. Internal parasites, GI illness, metabolic diseases, etc can all potentially cause vomiting as a symptom, so a complete exam is best to rule out any more serious problems.

There are a huge number of reasons that a cat will vomit. Since it sounds like Luna is mostly vomiting undigested food, she may simply be eating the dry food too quickly, so canned food is a great idea to try. Canned food is actually more biologically appropriate and better for a cat's health than dry food, so feeding Luna only canned food is a great idea. Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are many different reasons why cats will vomit periodically. It could be an allergy or sensitivity to the food, to inflammation anywhere in the GI tract, pancreatitis, liver or kidney disease, and many more. These cases can be extremely frustrating and take lots of testing to figure out because of this. The first thing I recommend is screening blood work to look for organ dysfunction that could lead to vomiting. In the vast majority of cats who are acting normal other than the vomiting, the blood work is usually normal. X-rays are also performed to look for any obvious change in organ shape or size and to look for obstruction, masses, etc. Beyond that, the testing gets more involved and typically involves an abdominal ultrasound. Sometime this can give you an answer. Other times the only way to confirm a diagnosis is through biopsies of the affected organs. The other thing that is commonly recommended is a change in diet. If there is an ingredient that she is sensitive to, we want to try to eliminate it from her diet. This is best done with a prescription diet because over-the-counter diets can be contaminated with ingredients that are not on the label. Food trials need to be done for at least 6 to 8 weeks and they can't eat anything else during this time. If the vomiting resolves with the new diet, I recommend keeping her on that diet long-term.
